US 85 engine tear down picts
Its been a fun but really tiring few days taking this motor apart. Learned a lot, didn't break anything but skin, kind of surprised how physical it was. Here are more picts, not all of them of the look at this mess variety. Next week I start cleaning and prep to put it back together "nice".
My what dirty pistons you have .... ![]() Here is hint why, filthy oil mixed with coolant draining from filter. ![]() Glob of stuff on the drain plug. ![]() Mini barrel of Grade zero crude. ![]() This would have made startup non fun. (oil pickup tube)

This oil pan is actually MUCH worse looking in person, that goo is THICK.
![]() Ready for my closeup. ![]() Messy inside. ![]() Impeller contact from previous water pump. ![]() Getting all the gears etc off this thing was hard work.

Gotta use your hoses to protect crank and cylinder walls from hard rod bolts.
![]() Before disassembly each rod gets stamped with cylinder number. ![]() Quick wipe with a rag, and looks like cylinder walls are in good shape. ![]() Different angle on cylinder bores. ![]() Next week the "after" pictures start. |

As promised here are some picts after some cleaning time, mostly via the big washer, but I also got in a couple hours of quality time with a razor blade, then chased all the threads. Still no firm thoughts on what I want to do next, rolling around the 104mm options.
Oil pan MUCH improved. ![]() Cradle still dirty. ![]() Closer look at the bearings place, minus bearing. ![]() Couple of the bearings look pretty good, two had an inanimate bit caught in the matrix. ![]()

More picts of clean parts ....
Side of this one is the thrust bearing. OK AFAIK, but getting replaced. ![]() Amazing how nice and shiny the block is. ![]() ![]() Best I could do with a razor blade, guessing I need polish or something? ![]() Pistons and crank still need cleaning, but no point until time to send them out for machine work.

Mike,
With all the hours you spend at 928 Intl, you should just work there and get us employee discounts

928Intl is too full of stuff, I am at a familiar shop down the street a bit. I'm not sure Mark gives himself a discount, or maybe its like the Kmart employee discount, "we give everybody a discount".
![]() I do have work shirt with my name on it, maybe I'll wear it for Sharktoberfest. |

YOU'RE crazy if you try to bore that beyond 100 mm! Call Devek: They'll tell you that pre-'87 blocks cannot reliably be bored past 100.5 mm! -That motor has a lot of gunk. Any idea which oil was used in it? I suspect Castrol-
Castrol GTX is the best dino juice from what I've read, but it leaves a definite color on crankcase walls.... N! Last edited by Normy; 09-21-2008 at 11:12 PM.. |

Erkka made a timely post on rennlist today about bore sizes, and it sounds like 104mm requires new custom rods with any of the easy to get pistons (968 etc), which bumps the cost a bit more than I care for. Plenty of time to ponder the options though, since my 145k mile US 83 4.7 is running so well now.
I take everything I hear from Devek with a few grains of salt. |

Existing bores could be used just fine as is, set of rings maybe just to be prudent and it could go back together.
I haven't given up on a 5.4L, maybe after N20shark gets his cams installed I will become motivated. |
