Keys

I'm new to the world of 928's. I just bought a '78 928 & boy is it a rude awakening. I'm in Wayne New Jersey & can't find a locksmith to reproduce the key for this car. It's the only one I have & if it's lost or damaged, I'm finished. Anyone know who can reproduce a key for this car near here? Also, the car came with a red/orange colored original Porsche locking gas cap but the key that came with it doesn't work, & the previous owner only has what he gave me. No one I've found around here can pick the lock. I'm fortunate the gas cap is off the car. New ones on Pelican are $157.00 which is way too much for a gas cap but they are about on par with almost all other suppliers, forget the dealer. I don't need a locking gas cap nor do I want one. Any ideas? Help!

Congrats you now own an expensive Porsche.

Keys 4 Classics can cut you a new key if you email them a good picture of your existing key. Details on their web site, and they have a long history of success for many other owners.

Nobody but Porsche makes a gas cap that works on a 928. There is a little plastic pawl that breaks in the lock mechanism, and there are various threads on potential fixes. Most don't bother.

No way around it, some items for your car are going to be SPOOKY expensive, others you may have some options with. Either way we are here to help. Post some picts of your new dependent so we can all better share your pain.

+1 on keys4classics....they did a great job for me and were really quick..i bought a used gas cap from 928 International..and didn't worry about the keying of that..just be sure you get the "o" ring that goes with it..i don't think they check the used caps to see if they have one
