Odometer & fuel consumption gauge not working

I pulled the pod today to clean up and get some Blue led's from Nicole in.
All went well (about 3 hours all told, including taking the pod out a second time as I'd gotten one LED in the wrong way round)
At last I can see how fast I'm going at night again (thanks Nicole).

Good news all round then. Pulling the pod turned out to be easier than I expected.

I have the usual Porsche problem of an odometer that stopped working (at around 180 000km). I'd like to get that working again as well. I have heard I need to replace a plastic gear. Where do I get replacements?

The fuel consumption gauge sometimes work, sometimes sits at 0, sometimes sits all the way to the right. Is this because the odometer is also not working?

thanks

Pauwl

Rog,

thanks.

Do you know why the fuel gauge meter is not working or what I should look at to fix it? If I take the cluster apart, I'm keen to do both jobs at once.

It's likely the circuit foil on the back of the cluster.

It could be the circuitry that drives the odometer motor. I had a bad circuit board, where the speedo would work, but the odometer would not. The gear was fine, but the odometer would work only sometimes.

I put in a euro l/100K gauge, and found that the gauge would die at the same time as the odometer.

The l/100K 'computer' has four inputs, injector pulses from the L/LH (or a sensor on the CIS distributor), speed, RPM, and coolant temp.

My fuel consumption gauge is sometime intermittent. I've been told that if your interior lights do not work properly it will impact this gauge. I have yet to solve my lighting problems so I cannot say this is a solution but if your interior lights do not work properly it might be a starting point.

My 85 928 has the same problem where the speedometer works, (although sometimes seems to stick at 0 mph, but pushing 0 button always wakes it up) but the odometer does not work. Is there a proven fix for this, (work on circuit board perhaps). I assume the gear would only work if both speedo and odo do not work.
do I have to replace the circuitboard all together.?
How hard is it to take out the pod. ?
Thanks

Raimond

I think pushing that button is Porsche Speedo gear roulette, each time you take a chance on it breaking. Roger has replacement gears.

Thanks , I wasn't aware of that. So it would pobably be a good exercize to replace the gear in my situation? (speedo works, odo doesn't). Or would work to the circuit board be required as well?

Raimond,

from all I've read it's a gear thing. My speedo works fine, sometimes 'sleeps' until I hit 50km/h.

The odometer just does nothing at all. I've fiddled the cogs from the front when I had the pod out, but it didn't help at all.

I'm going to order the stuff and do the gear thing. Pulling the pod was easier than I expected, so no worries there.

I used Sharskins' procedure for pulling the pod: http://members.rennlist.com/sharkskin/Pages_SA_R22-PodElectricalRefurb.htm

Seems daunting, go slow & it's easy.

Pauwl,

everyone here is correct about the speedo gear, unless you're having trouble with the sensor (transaxle) or the connection at the rear of the car (near the battery box).

one note of caution:

do not try to reset the odometer while the car is moving. my understanding is this will break the gear(s).

have you determined which of your suspension parts are needing replacement?

let me know via PM or e-mail if you need parts.

good luck!

Thanks Pauwl,

I guess I will be doing the pod removal in the near future, see what I find.

Thanks for the link.

Raimond

Quick Question: I know how to pull the pod and replace lights, but I don't know how hard it is to get to the gear. Mine just quit three days ago. I want to pull the pod but want to know once pulled, how hard a job it is to get to the gear? Do I have to remove the foil or do you access it from the front?

Michael

to remove the pod you will want the shop manual or find the procedure on the internet. (seems like it's on one of the usual sites).it's not hard just a bit tedious Anyway, once you get the pod out the gear is very simple to replace...

..and many of the gauge problems are caused by those lousy plastic edge connectors on the back of the cluster..once you have the pod out you should clean the contacts on the board (careful..those flexible circuits are delicate) and clean the connectors.

If you are more daring and want to make really sure you have contact, you can do what did and solder actual pin-style D-shell connectors to the circuit board and the wiring harness....that solved all of my gauge issues.

My speedometer would not go above 30mph, and the oil pressure and temp gauges were dead...once i changed out the connectors (and cleaned up the temp sender tabs)..everything worked

Instructions look good, but I am going to need to make something I can print out for the "guts" stage of replacement. A little cut and paste should do the trick.

Thanks for the link.

you're quite welcomed..it really is pretty easy..getting the pod out is all the work..just be sure you get the right gear..they usually carry different gears for the different speedos..i forgot what the distinctions are

Hi guys,

I too have this issue...I assume that the instructions that surfdog posted will work for an 83s as well...meaning that I am not going to run into any surprises along the way??

Also, Roger, as I got my car in the U.S. and I am in Canada, my guage is in MPH and not KPH which I would like (my wife mainly). I was wondering if you (or anybody else) has, or knows of an easy face plate changeout...without paying tonnes of money.

Thanks guys!
Mat.
