				Gas Cap
			 
			
			I just picked up an 82 928.  It has no gas cap.  I assumed that a "cap is a cap", but have now found that Stant doesn't make replacements.  Any easy way (cheap) to get a replacement?

			The 928 gas cap is unique, nothing else uses one, so new from Porsche or used and take your chances on it sealing or locking. New cap comes with a new key and lock, but you can get the locks rekeyed to match your car if you want.

	If the previous owner didn't bother replacing the gas cap, my guess is that you have a VERY expensive project ahead of you, and few corners to cut costs on. Before you start spending any money on it a complete inspection and guesstimate of repairs might be a good idea.  |

			Does this 82 run?  If not, I think Dangler is right, your in for a treat.  All kinds of crud can be at the bottom of your tank.  Anyways, Rixters got a cap, buy his and seal up that tank. Been gone for awhile.  Hope you all had a good Christmas.  Yes, the car runs (needs tuneup maintenance).  Filler tube is rigid to the tank?  That adds a minor problem.  But, I wouldn't care about cutting it off, and then adding a fuel filler from something else, with a piece of flexible hose.  Ever seen a parts blow-up / exploded view?  Bought a CD with the maintenance / repair (it's the shop manual).  But, it is lacking in pictures / diagrams.  For motorcycles, bikebandit.com has exploded diagrams for everything. 			I haven't seen a 928 yet that needed what might be called a tuneup. Rough running is usually some combination of vacuum, wiring, failed sensors or some actuator. No gas cap would have me point the first finger at contaminated gas, water, dirt etc. 
		
	
		
	
			
			
		
		
		
		
		
		
		
	
	Fuel tank is a big $1k plastic thing that hangs from a metal bracket in or near the portion with the filler neck.

			On the gas tank --- carving on that gas tank to avoid spending money on a missing gas cap? Buy the cap. Clean the tank. Your fuel pump is $250 to replace and it will likely fail in several months because the strainer built into the discharge fitting is too coarse to prevent debris from entering the pump and, like russian roullette, jamming it. In general ---- Part of the reason Porsche could accomplish the performance on these cars is singular engineering of every part, with few exceptions, and morphing of the parts year to year as needed to accomplish other enhancements. Starting to carve on them is a slippery slope. You can rig stuff and it might work, but the degradation of the car will be irreversible. These are not chevelles.
