US or Row? Model year?
Doesn't crank, or cranks but doesn't start? Is the fuel pump running while you try to start? Check for spark with a timing light or by pulling a plug and watching. Check for fuel with a noid light at a injector if the fuel pump runs. |

what year is your car? Anything odd before the no start?

no start
have you tried a little starting fluid? (just a little)
did you check the cam and ign timing? double checked the firing pattern?

Do you have an alarm system that shuts off the ignition. My 83 does.

'83 928 US model... No alarm and nothing odd before parking it. I have both fuel & spark as well as I hear the fuel pump kicking on. Car has gas... tried starter fluid but nothing. The car wants to crank and runs for breif second but it's very rough. I had the firing and arranged everything they way it should go. To me it sounds like timing but I don't see how! If you know the firing order let me know and I'll look around for the one I had to see if it matches... Thanks

sorry it's an '81 928... firing order I have is 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8. What's the numbering of the cylinders on the left and right bank?

cylinders are numbered as follows:
Passenger side front to back 1,2,3,4 drivers side front to back 5,6,7,8 if you have spark, fuel at the injectors (they should click or buzz), and compression (timing belt OK???), it should run---basic engine 101 stuff. However, if the timing belt has either broken to jump teeth, it ain't going anywhere. check compression in cylinders to confirm. timing belts are subject to breakage at any time, even when you pull it in the garage, shut it down, and then try to restart. I would check the TB first before moving on to spark or fuel computers and such. --Russ

Spark, fuel, compression, just like Russ says.
I'm lazy, so I tend to check easy stuff first. Timing light for spark and spark timing. Noid light to check for injector signal. Then pull the plugs and check compression. Pull the plugs immediately after a starting attempt, and check for wet fuel on them, as well as color etc. If they aren't wet you aren't getting fuel. |

cylinders numbered: passenger 1234; driver 5678... I brought #1 cylinder to TDC, rotor button isn't exactly pointing on #1 but it's close. on the distributor cap iv'e started with #1 with firing order 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8 going clockwise. Have fuel & spark... now I it doesn't crank and I can hear it lobing in the exhaust... I'm not able to make out what marking on the cam gear I'm suppose to be lining up with the mark on the casting, which I can't make out either. The manual gives no close up... what next on this??? I now there was a post about 3 months ago where everyone went into to great detail on timing w/pics and all. If someone could send the link on that post I might be able to solve my problem.

Cranking means the motor is being turned by the starter.
How did you test for fuel and spark? Easier to test for compression than to check cam timing via marks. (easier for me to explain how anyway). One of the victims of the last cam timing adventure is sure to post a link, but I'm not sure how educational the thread is ... Do you have a full charge on the battery and clean contacts? What voltage do you get at the jump post?

Suppose we should start with basics here.
Pull a plug wire on each bank of cylinders, arc them to ground with a screw driver. Have someone crank it over. Do both sides show an arc of spark? If so you have spark. If you jumper the fuel pump relay 30/87, do you hear the fuel pump running? If so, you have the means for fuel pressure. If you have a no start issue from here on, then you have a fuel delivery problem to the injectors. Now on the horrible side, you might have all of that going on but your cams are not turning. Check to see if your cams are turning through the inspection holes on the intake breathers. These are located under the intake tubes. Take a flash light and look in as its cranking.

Gas
If you pumped the gas ,very easy to foul them out

either bunny
Does it kick on a puff of starting fluid? that is another way to check for no fuel. don't use too much though, it can wash down piston walls.
