Well Grounded No Start No power

Hello Folks! Just wanted to share with you a little tidbit of experience. Bear with me, I will make it short. OK, My brother and I went to pick up the newest member of the family, a 1984 928S. The ORIGINAL plan was to tow it home. Well...Things happen, or in this case didn't happen and We really didn't feel like keeping it in the PO's yard anymore. The guy had been pretty good to us and all that, but he was getting rid of stuff and we decided to just roll the dice and drive her home. It started a few times then the power went dead. Thinking it was the positive lead I cleaned up the terminals. Nothing. I cleaned the ground strap point. Nothing. At this point I tested the battery and found plenty of juice at the terminals. I then tested the voltage to the Ground point. NOTHING! It seems that the ground strap itself had gone south. WHA? I have NEVER seen a ground strap go south like that, ever. It had corroded on the ground point end where the strap is crimped into the flange.

Anyhow, George (the PO and one hec of a guy ) dipped the striped down ground strap in muriatic acid and some smoking later we pulled it out all clean and shiny. We rinsed it off, It tested good, and I wrapped it back up and bolted it all together. BINGO! The car was good to go for the 150 or so miles we drove it home.

So, the moral of the story is to not only check your grounds...but check your ground strap as well. Who knows what problems an intermittent or weak connection on that puppy can cause. Thanks for reading!
