What is an LSD Tranny and how do we know we have it?

Easiest way is jack the back end off the ground. Turn one rear wheel if the other rotates the same direction you have it if it rotates the opposite direction you don't.
LSD...limited slip diff. Drive wheel spins the opposite generates power instead of just sitting there....kind of half way between positive trac and non. |

I was going to tell him to stay out of that part of town at night, or bring a flashlight to check the bottom of the tranny. With LSD maybe you don't care so much about tranny details?
***talking about 928's, really. |

But for the dignity of the forum I think I could grind on this joke a LOT longer.
Except for a track car I don't think a 928 needs a LSD. My 83 is non LSD and it puts down two black stripes just fine. The torque tube prevents the twist bias loading on the rear wheels with heavy acceleration, so it really just a surface condition thing, and I don't see that as sufficient to warrant the cost of switching. *** BTW the one I am thinking about is really funny too, just really not clean. |

I am glad to to have both sides of the answer. I knew it was going to happen, but I am glad the intended was answered first

your trans should have a 12 in the stamping number if I remember correctly. if not, some one else can give the correct one---- an 11 won't do it.
even if you've go the right number, it's still a good idea to jack up and spin the tires as described above. if one tire goes the opposite direction, you have no LSD or a severely worn out LSD. for that matter, pull the rear cover and look at the diff. if you remove the rear cover, you'll know for sure. with the open diff, you will be able to see the spider gears. with a LSD, the internals are totally encased. --Russ

Russ is correct. the /12 is what you're looking for stamped on the bottom.
As for jacking the rear end up and rotating, to be 100% sure you need to lift only one rear wheel and turn it with a torque wrench to verify that you can apply (I think) 20 to 40 lb/ft of force before it slips and starts to turn. I've done all three. ![]() |
