1982 928 Auto Trans With No Reverse?

Reverse just went out on 1982 928 with automatic trans, 48,000 miles. All forward positions/gears work well and shift smooth.

Checked fluid per factory manual...was approx 3/4 quart low...added to spec....still no reverse.

Console shifter seems AOK...reverse electrical connection checks AOK.

External inspection of linkage appears AOK.

Would failure of the multi-function switch on the trans effect / prevent Reverse to operate but continue to allow forward gears to work fine.

Second owner and don't have records of last transmission service???

Thank you in advance to all for your insights and service suggestions.

New / Old Porsche Owner

Just a guess when it comes to AT, but I would start with fresh fluid and filter.

Checked fluid per factory manual means ...? Engine warmed up, running in gear or something?

Thanks for your input...factory manual proceedure...car warmed...transmission in Neutral...fluid level with in notch on metal bracket on outside of fluild fill tube...top of notch max ...bottom of notch min. Also engaged transmission in all gears to ensure all cavities etc were filled prior to check...

Also, no abuse prior to transmission not having reverse function...just normal driving...

Thank you again to any and all who have experienced this this situation!

I would go with DanglerB's suggestion. Just put a fresh filter and fluid in there. This may eliminate things sticking in there.

Thanks MPDano for your recommendation as well....

I would greatly appreciate any and all 928 owners, mechanics, etc who have experienced reverse going out on 1982 or similar vintage automatic transmission to weigh in too.

All the Best To All!

I have been TOLD by a transmission rebuild shop the REV creates more internal pressure than any other gear. Could be a sign of a week pump.
