Dome Light Changeout.

I read a great thread on that other forum about using VW Dome Lights. I was able to pick up 3 for $10 plus shipping on eBay. You can see in the pics that I cut off the connector housing off the 3 lights so I could solder some wires directly to the connector spades. I masked the lenses and painted them black. They fit perfectly in the stock light opening in the headliners.

My only issue is the setting where the light should turn on during door open is very dim (last pic). If I fiddle with the passenger door switch it does flicker and it turns the Red Door Jamb lights on. So I am using them as just as either On or Off for the moment.

Alan, any suggestions? Does this sound like bad door switches?

Yes it sounds like the switches in an '81 (answer would be different for other years) - I would just replace them with new - they are cheap.

Where did you put the small unswitched one - its too small for all our stock light openings right?

BTW these come in black too...(I have them (and grey)) and you can buy the wiring harness plug from VW (roger stocks both...)

The 2nd (rear) rear hatch light (for those that have it) needs a modification to the housing (like you did) to fit - the others can use the VW harness and quick connect terminals to plug in just like stock and leave the option to re-fit stock lights

Hi Alan,

Thanks for clarification on the replacing switches. I will do that. Yes, I know they sell harnesses but I like the idea of being a cheapskate that I am, plus I like to keep up on my soldering skills. The little one actually goes into the VW cars Glovebox, which is why it's so small. I am unsure if I will use it there, but since i had the soldering gun and rattle can out, why not. I love the ideas you guys come up with and improving our 928's!

The Lights were Tan in color, but didn't matter since I got the killer deal for all 3 at $10 and had some Black Paint just waiting to be used on them. I did see the black ones in an auction, but they were going for too high of price. Also, $35 per light new, no thanks.
