Water Pump

Pretty sure my my water pump finally failed. I was not sure how long it would last as I could not find a service record for it on my '78 after buying it. Had planned to replace it but like all things waited until it broke. Signs were:

1. In the last month or so a faint screech type sound from under hood for a minute while warming up, almost sounds like a slightly slipping/loose belt.

2. Water temperature was higher than normal after driving, no overheat though, thought it was just the summer months messing with my mind.

3. Oil pressure was lower by about a bar during idle after driving the car.

4. Stream of coolant all over my office parking spot coming from front of motor dripping off the front of the oil pan.

I think water pump may be one of the items that suffers the most from a car rarely or not driven. Coolant seeps past the seal and the bearing goes within a few hundreds miles or so.

What pump do you plan to use?

I haven't decided what my next one might be.

I knew mine was going out when I heard the chattering from the front, louder driving through the parking deck at work. I ordered a new pump from Roger @ 928srus, jury's still out on the long term reliability but so far no problems with the new pump at all. Of course then the radiator blew.

I always figured the big 3 vendors will carry what is good for our cars, so I never experiment with eBay finds on this kinda stuff.

I'm not a happy camper about it, but at this point I would be ordering a new pump directly from Porsche. If it goes fubar, they have the deep pockets to pay for the damages.

Unless you get Porsche to install that Porsche OEM WP, they will most likely blame on the non-Porsche installer or you for it not being installed correctly. Just my opinion

i have a a ebay knock off for cheap. i will only sell it to a shark owner with a non-interference motor. $80 takes it Pm if interested seems these days if you use the wrong coolant doesnt matter what pump you buy it will still leak after sitting for awhile

The saga continues. Broke a water pump bolt during removal of the pump. Did some cursing and by the looks of it I might have to break another. Now the fun starts....

This is normal. Although I got lucky and none broke for me. Lots of others have gotten same results as you.

I spray everything the day before with Kroil, and spray again that morning before getting started.

Just saw on ebay, a DIY water pump rebuild kit, was not impressed.

Run from eBay Water Pumps. Buy only from the Big 3 Vendors. NO used parts for this as it's not worth the pain and headache that could happen if it fails.

Dunno, the ebay seller "claims" they are the place that rebuilds for Porsche for decades.

I might feel more confident if they spell checked their listings, but I only play grammar cop for my own amusement.

Sometimes you can get away cheap, sometimes you have to pay Porsche prices. I'm going to have $6k to $7k into this next motor, no way am I screwing with less than the safest choice on a water pump even if it is $600. I'm even thinking about a Porkentensioner ...

I have 2 running with Roger rebuilds.

Third had a brand new casting Lasso from Roger, installed 4 weeks ago.

This is the way I will go with the next, also. Around $240 or so.

Dangler's approach may be better, but I can't use-up that much money on that solution. Not sure I could ever reap any warranty benefit there on a self-install, either, if one was offered. Porsche lawyers are too good.
