Steering Wheel Replacement

Blue leather is dried, cracked, and breaking off. Two questions:
- Can you get new leather for these steering wheels and redo? I thought that you use to be able to purchase but can't seem to find with our host.

- Can I just purchase a used one from a later 928, 944, 911 or is there a fitment issue? I've seen some of the newer steering wheels that look good but not sure where to find a fitment guide. I would love to get a newer wheel on there however don't have a way to test fitment unless I purchase.

1985 Porsche 928.

Michael

I've seen them done up with a 930 wheel. Looks sweet! Or you can always get a Momo adapter and get any Momo you want.

recover kits are available from the major suppliers in all the factory colors
944/911 wheels will not fit a 928, the splines are different

Pro recover is about $300 last I checked, good used ones go for about half that, and about $100 more for a new 930 steering wheel.

get the recover kit for $30-35, take it to your local tailor/seamstress and have one of their folks do it on their own time at nite, cost about $75-100

The wheelskins ones don't look right to me. I'll give them a call however that doesn't look proper.

5 years ago, I thought I remembered someone selling them that were made specifically for the different porsche models in factory colors.

Thanks for the insight.

Wheel skins are I think the cheap ones, then Alfa or Afla, then the good ones in real Porsche leather like Rob or Paul would sell.

Check with Mark at 928Intl. Last time I was down there, he has numerous steering wheels that were in excellent condition I bought a nice MOMO from Mark when I had my 1982 928S

Two other options, although more expensive, are the 928 professionals...

True craftsmen and they give you what you pay for...My two pennies.

I found some kits here for 944/968. Not sure if they will work or not but you could email them and ask.

Rob at 928 Leathershop redid my steering wheel. Fantastic job! If you go the cheap route be aware that porsche used a few different shades of blue. I suggest contacting him directly and seeing what the cost is. I warn you that refreshing leather interior parts is addictive. There is NOTHING like the smell of fresh leather!

Keep an eye on ebay too; I got a NOS burgandy wheel a few months ago. Sure, the new leather smell is diminised by about 20 years or so, but it just looks so sweet, and the leather is still nice and soft.

Be careful ordering off EBay as a lot of sellers list 924/944 steering wheel for 928's. They won't fit unless they have the 928 part. Found out the hard way.

Heck you can "buy" that new leather smell.
