Gas Tank Leak
Noticed a gasoline smell this morning in the garage. Later found out that there is a small visible crack on the bottom of my tank near the front strap that holds the tank in place. Right now the drip is very slow and small. What is the best way to make a repair? I do have a heat gun that can weld plastic, but I'm not sure what type of plastic the tank is made of. Or if another method may be easier? Any suggestions?

Replace it.
At the very minimum the whole tank needs to come out and be CAREFULLY inspected for further damage, and a source of what caused this problem. New tank is about $950 I think, used tank depends on who has one in your area, maybe $150. |

Sure you can repair it. I mean, it's just a ticking time bomb behind your head.
Do what Mikey said, replace it!

The reason I say replace it is normally the tanks are very robust, even old ones are fine. My concern is that something damaged your tank, and this leak may be just the first signs of greater issues. 23.5 gallons of gas makes a heck of a fire, its not worth the risk.
Do try to find the source of the damage, otherwise the same thing could damage any new tank. |

Thanks to the group for the replies. I just about have the tank removed. Have it drained and hoses etc. loose, just two bolts and out she comes. A close inspection only showed the small stress crack. I remember reading on one of the sites some time back that where mine has the crack is a common spot. There was no contact with a foreign object or any scrape marks.

That's good news as far a your research on the stress crack. Also, nothing foreign near to crack it. If your going used. Make sure you get one that will be guaranteed. ie; 928 Intl, 928 Worldwide, etc. Also, if you get a used one it's not clean, just take it to a radiator shop and have them acid wash it before putting it back in. New hoses and seals.
Good luck and keep us posted

The single bolt at the aluminum tab near the filler is "the" support for the tank, remove it last.

I have a used 88 tank off my parts car (courtesy of my teenage son - the parts car that is). But I think they are repariable, like you, I saw an article by someone that repaired a tank.

I agree "it can be done", I am just suggesting it is ill advised. My thinking is that it is a judgment call whether or not to replace it with a new or a used tank, but a used tank that shows no signs of damage and holds pressure etc. is my minimum. All the hoses and rubber parts need to be new, as well as the cushions on the support frame.
When we buy a used 928 pretty much nobody preventively installs a new gas tank. If keeping the used tank that comes with a used 928 that hasn't been removed and inspected is OK, then replacing a bad tank with a good inspected and cleaned one is OK too. |

Repair Made
Someone suggested to me a product called "Seal-All", which I have applied following the directions. This is an adhesive product which is flexible and designed for such repairs. I applied three layers of the product with a strip of metal laminated between two of the coats. I will test for any leaks prior to the re-install. I hope to install the tank in a few days, this will enable me to get the car running while I look for a replacement. I'm pretty sure a friend has a replacement. There was some corrosion on the tank support bracket where the pressure line and electrics are nested going to the filter and pump. I'm cleaning that up and painting prior to assembly, also installing new foam pads and hoses.
