Sr. Techy Question what the hell is this?

Ok, first let me say that I have had a blast restoring this 928 (my first Porsche) and I have learned soooooooo much from my fellow brothers and posts on this site.

Now I have a great one for those Sr 928 specialists -

First off let me explain what is happening. I had to remove the air plumbing and valve covers as they were atrocious - had them powder coated, so far nothing big on the difficultly scale.

928 was not running when I got it - Mass Air Meter was not plugged in (most likely needs to be replaced considering the condition) YOU WILL LOVE THIS ONE, linkage to the air intake "butterfly valve" under the air plumbing was not even hooked up so the 928 was sucking oil vapor from the passenger bank as its only source of O2.

Well after cleaning everything, new plugs, new gaskets, rebuilt and flow matched injectors, media cleaned fuel rails, new vac lines and dist block routed the same way as the diagram under the hood, we got it back together and test fired, sounds like we are only on about 4 cylinders.

Vac pressure is about 25-28 PSI
Fuel Pressure is about 39 PSI

Plans for this weekend included

Verify and clean all grounds (which is how I got in this mess)
Verify spark across all 8 and the dist
Verify injectors are firing

NOW THE 84 MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION

When cleaning and inspecting the grounds I found this precarious looking ground on the front fender (See pics) WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THIS FOR and where does that ground go that I followed under the car??

Sometimes I hate technology.. SORRY i cant post pics direct, no idea how.. I followed the directions (for once) and look where it got me.

I have no idea if you can see the pics or not, on PHOTOBUCKET.com search for user banginbodies (long story not what you think), look at PROJECT 928 at the bottom..

Thanks for all the help..

Photobucket Site Maintenance

Details on car, its an 85 auto, is it US or Euro?

Have you checked the injectors for clicking and with a noid light?

Did you check the cam timing? Compression test?

MajorDamage 05-15-2009 09:55 AM

I did not check with NOID light, suggestions on national chain that rents them?

No idea how to check timing? Can you help? I have photocopied PDF shop manual, just dont know where to look or how.

Compression no, I have not tried that, I will add this to my list.

Any suggestions will be great. thanks

Danglerb 05-15-2009 10:15 AM

Top priority, inspect the timing belt and cam gear timing.

Noid lights are about $15 or less for a cheap set. Plugs into wiring harness instead of an injector and lights up with injector pulses. First use a piece of rubber hose, each injector should make a nice similar to the others clicking sound.

This one on ebay is typical

Here is my vin

928 S 1985 Black wp0jb0921fs860652 MI

I do not know if its a EURO or US, hopefully one of you can guide me on how to determine that - this is my first Porsche and I am completely hooked and I have yet to drive one.

OKAY Found a noid light set at Advanced so I will be off to secure that later for testing.

Compression, what is a normal range or average ( I will rent one of these to so I can do both at once)

Last question for now, how do you put pics in the post - I tried to follow the directions using the tags from photobucket, I just cant seem to make that work.. :(

Looks like a US VIN to me.

When posting pics, use the "Go Advanced" button and follow it under the text box and Upload your Photos. Let Pelican host those pics and stop messing with photobucket.

Looks McGyvered to me. Doesn't look stock at all.

MPDano 05-15-2009 01:52 PM

Did you try and temporarily remove that non-stock piece and jump the correct wire together? That's what I would do. Start it up and just be ready to yank the jumped piece just in case all hell breaks loose. There could be a good reason for that splice to a Relay.

MajorDamage 05-15-2009 02:00 PM

I knew it wasnt stock by the end connectors, My question was whats the Red wire with Green stripe for? Also where in the world does that ground go to down the front of the block, and what is the black wire trigger for?? WOW , all I can think of is a RON WHITE quote here that applys to the last owner " YOU CANT FIX STUPID"

:)

Thanks for the help, ANYTHING at this point is good advice...

MPDano 05-15-2009 02:16 PM

I know what your saying, but why not connect all the stock stuff back with jumpers. You can always put it back. All that crap isn't stock and only you can tell where that non-stock black wire goes to in front of your block. Follow it and see, this will give a better clue on that Relay Jimmy Job is.

more like McGyver's retarded cousin...

I found the same $hit in my dash pod and stereo wiring. Best you can do is figure out were the black wire goes and what the red/green wire is for...

I had a link to a break down of what all those wires at the jump start terminal are for. Let me see if I can find it.

psychII 05-15-2009 04:02 PM

I couldn't find what I was looking for.

Could the PO have been trying to rewire the alternator or starter? Do you have electric fans?

Normy 05-15-2009 04:41 PM

If you say that your car is running on four cylinders....have you completely checked over the ignition system? Are you getting spark on all cylinders? Start there.

As to that wire...if you can access the manuals, then you can look at the wiring diagram for that big connector, and start following lines from there.

Good luck!

Barbapapa 05-15-2009 04:46 PM

Ugh. You should spend some quality time with a wiring diagram and get rid of that crap. Use some nice spilces with heat shrink...ahh. No electrical tape should be allowed anywhere near a Porsche:).
Ground wires are brown from Porsche, not black.

Normy 05-15-2009 04:48 PM

If it helps you any, here is a picture of that area on my own car, an '85. Do note that my car is an S2 [Euro], but I suspect the wiring harness is the same.

Good luck!
