What are you talkin about Leo? All 928's are supercars, and Porsche at least considered the first model as a supercar, and it won Car of the Year in Europe that year.

Yeah, I think 1978 is when was car of the year. I guess my question is. If the 928 was a Supercar in 1978, then what other car was ALSO a Supercar during 1978? Countach, Pacer, Pinto, etc?

"Supercar" requirements are quite strict actually,
0-60 MPH 3.9 sec or less min 1g in road holding I forgot the quarter mile times and there is also a requirement for models produced, this is what keeps the C5 Z06 out... |

Obviously those specs aren't for a 1978 Supercar.

Oh Oh Oh, I see, your right... Well maybe the 928 falls into that cat for that era, I don't see why not.
Maybe Ferrari Daytona, Pantera, etc... |

1974 to 1978 were some LEAN times for fast cars. I think it was 1976 the two FASTEST 0-60 cars were the Iroc Z and Lotus Europa John Player Special, 6.6 seconds. Back in 1974 the Pantera could crank out 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, but sat on dealer lots because you couldn't buy gas.

Nah, I was talking about 3.9 sec 60mph. I believe the early 928's were like 6.5 seconds.

From http://www.autozine.org/classic/porsche.htm:
"In the year of its launch, 928 won the most recognised European Car of The Year (COTY) award. That was the first and only occasion that a sports car won this title." The L-82 Corvette's of the late 70's were solid mid 6 second cars when it came to 0-60. Pretty good performance during the dark days of the newly developed smog requirements. Of course, most of the time you couldn't buy one in California. Remember all those car ads that would advertise 0-50 times in order to make the cars appear faster? The 1978 928 5spd was 0-60 at 7.0 according to Road and Track, the auto clocked in at 8.3 Last edited by rjm65; 05-13-2009 at 11:53 AM.. |

I flew with a guy a few years ago who spent $22,000 to buy a rebuilt and refurbished 1982 collectors-edition corvette out of California. He drove it home to Soiux Falls, South Dakota. I asked him about the performance of the 5.0 liter "cross fire injection" V8, and he told me that it had good pick up, but the car wasn't fast at all- he said 0-60 in 8.0 seconds. That 3400 pound car had all of 205 hp~
That is 0.3 slower than what Road & Track was able to attain with a 16 valve VW Scirocco in 1986. The Scirocco had 123 hp... -My '92 Corrado SLC had a 178 hp V6 engine, and a few upgrades. I had the Neuspeed cat-back exhaust, a cold air intake, and a Neuspeed chip. I took it to a drag strip and ran it four times. My best time was running against a '72 corvette convertible with a 350. I didn't "destroy" him but I put him behind me down the stretch. I ran a 14.96 @ 93.25, and he was right behind my bumper. 170 cubic inches defeats 350. Is there any debate about whether VW or gm builds a better car? I took my 928 to the same strip and ran a 13.86 at 105. Four tries, three were around 14.0 and 104 mph. This car, this 928 has all sorts of problems hooking up! And that was back when the car wasn't running right. I bet I could shave a few tenths off of that now, and other people with S2's that have tried have managed 13.6. There's a guy in Denmark that has a car similar to mine, and his was able to indicate 275 kmh on a section of road. That is right around 170 mph. Impressive, considering the OB body isn't all that aerodynamic. I can't even measure my 0-60 time; I can't hook up, despite 200 tread-wear Falken RT-615 tires. I bought a G-tech and it told me once 5.5 seconds. I really don't care, since it has told me 4.5 and 6.6 at other times. It is possible that both are true- this car is VERY sensitive to temperature. In the winter in Florida, on a 55 degree F day this thing is barely controllable. 93 degrees? It's fast...but not all that fast. -What does all this mean? I'll tell you; I means that no matter how much you try, there will always be someone with something faster. There's nothing slow about the Porsche 928, but it isn't the late model ZO6 corvette or Dodge Viper or Lamborghini Gallardo either. Each of those cars will destroy a 928. The 928 is still a "super car". From another era, but still super. N! |

I live in a tony little town in CT where it is not unusual to see a "supercar" (F40, Carrera GT, Bugatti, etc), and looking at the above numbers, its kind of funny to reconcile this kind of performance with traffic that is (at least around here) congested with school buses, minivans, and pedestrians. Sadly, these cars seem to be purchased more for bragging rights than for anything else. Got to see another great example of this the other day, when I followed a Carrera GT down a congested town street. Traffic never got above 5 mph, but this guy insisted on revving the crap out of thing, just in case idling by in a $300K exotic car didn't get him enough attention. Oh well, like the old saying goes, money is wasted on the rich.

I will be the first to admit, if the vehicle I'm driving can do it, I will put it to it! I drove the ***** out of my Z06 every (safe) chance I could! As well as in closed course competition.
I agree with bet, a lot of extreme, formula one derived racing technology "street cars" are wasted on rich boys who just to "rev their engines in 5 mph traffic." I see that a lot where we live. |

If nobody is diving head first over concrete barriers, you aren't driving the 928 to its potential.

Drive it like Clarkson does.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cjXSdbljmg Supercar? Still is. As he says, 'feels extremely contemporary'. And as Mark A continues to demonstrate, set up right it can still stay with the new ones.....a 38 year old design. Truly a magnificent classic. |

I don't know what in the heck the guy did to mine before I bought it, all I know is that it is a 1978 euro, 5-speed, and it is BY FAR the fastest 928 I have EVER drove! As a matter of fact, I smoked my buddy in his 1987 S4 automatic! Not just one time either!

Maybe a swap with an early Euro S motor? Check the motor ID.
