Alright, I'll get a vid up asap and check everything else on it. But the car sat for around 2 years or so. There's still an inspection sticker on it that is good till august. So it had to of ran at least 2 years or a year ago.

Like tech said, fuel, spark, compression, those three make a car run. Spark has two parts to check, that a spark happens, and the timing of those sparks. Fuel has two parts, is there fuel, and how much or whats the air fuel ratio. Compression is how many psi the cranking motor makes with a test gauge instead of a spark plug. I use an inductive timing light to check spark timing, plus I have a little detector the size of a pencil that blinks when held over an active spark plug wire. If you have spark, pull the plugs and check for fuel (wet) and/or fuel smell. If plugs are wet, fuel can be smelled, and you never get a hint of firing, pull the fuel pump relay and check for compression. If compression is good, then maybe you are getting too much fuel, and pressure may be too high, bad sensor, or fuel injectors sticking open. Start with an update of current stats. ;) |
This may be a dumb question, but where is the water pump and timing belt? I hope your not cranking the car over without the timing belt on. I'm sure your not.

Well I need a new Fuel Injection Brain / Unit whatever it is.. does anyone happen to have a good used one they wouldn't mind selling for pretty cheap since rebuilt / new are $1300 at this point I can't afford that if anyone has one they are looking to sell for cheap anything reasonable
|
Why would you buy new? Especially with the Vendors selling good used warrantied parts. Try them to at least see how much it would be.

You are now on the short end of a long and expensive road. My first advice is to make it run, clean it up, and SELL it. Cut your loses- [there are minivans that will outrun that car to not only 60 mph...but through a quarter mile~] If that's not your objective, and you want this car, then look for Wally Pendley's electrical checkup on Rennlist or on www.928specialists.com This last details removing all the fuses and relays and cleaning them. Good luck- N! |
Who or what makes you think you need a new fuel injector/brain?
Did you clean the grounds yet and remove/clean the panel contacts? If not, you will fail. Period. Any questions? |

Well, seems like you got a few issues that need to be ironed out. As said, do not immediately assume you need a new FI brain, it could be contacts, bad ground, etc. Also could be a few other things, but again there will need to be some in depth troubleshooting involved. Who told you that you need the new brain? Just post all the info you can as you go through your steps, everyone here will provide as much info as possible whenever they can, as you have seen already. AND, as far as parts go, no problem, you have the best resource right under your nose and do not even know it. You want to ALWAYS go to the best, and they are a member here on Pelican as well. 928WorldWide is a full blooded 928 ONLY dismantler, and will have/get you whatever part you will ever need, at the best price on the market. Your POC will be Mason Fine, he will take care of you whenever you need it and again will for sure come through on any part you could possibly be in the market for, as long as it has, at one point in time, been attached to a 928. ;) Check out Mason and the rest of the 928WorldWide crew @: http://www.928worldwide.com/ And, as a perfect example, here is YOUR FI Brain off of 928WorldWide's Ebay store, for $199 or best offer, as said they are the best. |

BUT , I always seem to leave with things I did NOT go there for?!?!?:confused::confused: |
Based on deep study of archives, trying to solve my problems, I found the LJet brain rarely, if ever, fails. Nor does the spark box to which the green wire connects.
But dirty connections, corrosion and bad / intermittent relays on the 83 and 84 cars in particular will drive an owner crazy. Can't understand the concept of throwing parts at it. Borrow and try, maybe, but don't be buying starters and brains until you trace the wires. Then again, based on your posts, its probably over before it begins. Do what Normy says, just skip the part about getting it running first. |
If your new to the 928, not 100% sure of what you need, talk to more than one vendor, and ask about it here before you stock up on things you don't really need.
|
come on normy, The kid is excited about the car and wants to fix it up. What kind of advice or comment is that? Especially the mini van thing, Ill have you know I outran a very nice mini van just yesterday. what if this guy is the next carroll shelby and he gives up before he learns something great because of your bone head comment. I am sure there are plenty of cars out there that will outrun a 928, but I dont think thats the pointe of owning one. I think the pointe is to have something thats not seen around every corner, looks different than most cars. Has smooth acceleration and cruises like a missle down the highway. Not to mention owning a car that sold for @50,000 new. So orlisk do your thing and get help where you can and in the end either have fun driving the car or sell it, but no matter what take pride in what your doing and learn all you can. Good luck
|
Orlisk, You can to the right place here. Other sites aren't as friendly to new guy's. So, welcome and do your homework here. You can get that car running. Porsches are very durable. The 928 was so loaded with electrical stuff they tended to develop failures at the electrical connections and grounds. Also look for previous owner wire repairs that may have no been completed correctly or have failed.

Well me and my dad have been working on it in his garage, the fuel injection does not seem to be turning on. The car starts then shuts off and it can only stay running with this spray I can't remember what it was called exactly.. but he said that the fuel injectors aren't turning on and keeping it running.
|
The spray is called, blow up the intake spray. Usually at least one big surprise in every can, so you might want to stop using it. It has some use for a VERY brief test, but continuing to use it tells you nothing, and won't make it magically start to run without it.
That model year, all the early Ljet, have bullet proof fuel injection brains. Things to check. All the power and ground connections. Battery needs to be good with a full charge, holding 12.5v or higher. All power connections need to be real close to the battery voltage. All the ground connections need to be tight and shiny bright clean. Green wire needs to be good. Check electrical signal at injectors with a noid light. |
Alright thanks Dan.. next time I will be over there I am going to be cleaning the wires all around.. hopefully make progress.

NJ Brother Orlisk,
Thanks for checking back. Ditto on what Rich said. We are here to help you and your dad get the biotch running. In fact, to the extent each of us might help you guys via telephone if you requested it. Remember this. It will look like the most complicated mess in the world. Impossible. But its really simple underneath, in almost all cases. Especially the 84's. We each might take a different path fixing it, but we can help you. The information you just provided is really helpful. Let me tell you some stuff. If the injectors aren't coming on, there might be a bad injector relay. Or an alarm interrupt issue. Or a short in any single injector harness plug ( it would take them all out of commission). First step is a three-way jumper to bypass the injector relay ( I've had 3 fail, BTW). If you got combustion with ether, that means the spark side of the equation is good. Excellent. Now we focus on the injectors and fuel pump. If you or your dad want to talk on the phone, send me a private message. I am not an expert, but I have 1 full save and 1 shared save on USA 84's and know the wiring diagrams pretty well. |
I have too put my 2 cents in, I bought an 84 back in 2000, it had been sitting then and it sits now, because I haven't had time to work with it. I had somewhat similar symptoms, I had spark, fuel from cold start inj., but no signal to my injectors. Before I found this forum I sent my computer and ing mod. to WWW.PorscheDME.com. He made it clear that he could not fix the car, only test the computer and mod. and rebuild them as needed. Mine were fried, $450 later I left everything "lose" and only plugged them in and my car ran. I bolted everything back down, and I lost my inj. signal, again. My point is these guys are leading you down the right road about the power and ground connections. They defiantly know what they are talking about.

Thanks Dane.
Hello Orlisk- If you need anything call me at 215-768-5840. I cover it with a warranty and will help you with anything I can tech wise. Though I don't know it all, I know enough to tell you that we hardly ever sell the early ('82 lets say) brains, but the 85+ brains are always selling. This tells me something. Anyway, good luck and welcome to the wolf pack :) |
