Fuel filter question

Hi all

As always I am getting more and more surprises while working on my 928...
Today I wanted to replace the fuel filter.
I bought a nice new KL21 filter but when I removed the rear wheel in order to replace the fuel filter I found some other filter type.....I have attached a picture of it.
can somebody tell me what kind of fuel filter is it? all metal hoses seems to be genuine but the shape is different then what I have expected..

On second thought it doesnt look like a filter but as the fuel pressure reservoir...if so then:
1) what does it do?
2) where is the fuel filter?! can it be that my lovely previous owner removed it?

Maybe someone can post some pictures with that area so I will be able to see how it should be?

Thanks!

Doesn't look like a Porsche part to me. Somebody posted a pict of the fender fuel pump, but I didn't find it looking just now, maybe it will be repeated.

Shouldn't the 80 Euro be next to the fuel pump under a plate at the rear bumper? My 81 Euro is.

It holds fuel presure for the CIS system, They go bad somtimes the symtoms will be hard starting when warm or a strong fuel smell near the accumulator. No maintanance needed if it's work correctly

If you really want to check it out, do a pressure test on the CIS system, with the pump running record the pressure then switch it off and you sould see the pressure drop a small amount then it should hold there for 15-20 min. If not you have a fuel pump check valve leaking or a bad accumulator. Also there is a small screw in the bottom of the accumulator that you can take out and see if fuel is present if so the unit is bad

It's function is to even out the fluccuations in the pump pressure during acceleration, cornering, etc.

http://***********.com/model/928-78-82/201-05.htm

item 29, part number varies by vin, and I see two of them.

928 110 197 05 fuel accumulator 1
F >>92882 00053
F >>92882 09521
F 92882 00054>>
F 92882 09521>>
F >>92892 01042
F >>92892 09557
928 110 197 07 fuel accumulator -79 1
F 92892 01043>>
F 92892 09558>>

I think 0 438 170 026 is the superceded Bosch part, which may have better pricing, but looks like you need to be very sure you get what is correct for your car.

Both of those pictured are the later versions that have a safety fuel line that sends any leaking fuel back to the tank. The older versions, like the first picture, only had a plug and these often leaked if the internal diaphram was busted.
