I have a '78 & had almost the same problem. The plastic linkage that goes from the lock mechanism to the lock cylinder was broken. I went to the local hobby shop & got a threaded rod & set of tie rod ends from a Tamiya on road RC car. The ball cup size was a perfect fit. The ball studs can also be purchaced. Maybe buying a simple ball stud from an RC car would save you from buying a lock cylinder?. I hope this helps you.

Did the arm comming off the lock cylinder crack in half or did the ball stud?

well its the arm and the arm is actually a round and fit inside the lock cylinder and around the key barrel, I was going to try a silver solder.
