Fuel pump for 85 928
Hi,
I am trying to get a 1985 928 started. (Just got the car). The car will start with starter fluid but appears to not be getting gas. I checked the voltage at the fuel pump and it reaches up to around 12v when the engine is cranking, but I cannot hear the pump "hum". I connected 12v directly to the pump and I only hear a click, no hum (polarity is correct). I mention "hum" because I have an 87 944s and you can hear the fuel pump "hum" when the dme relay is jumped properly or 12v is applied to the pump. The pump is a bosch part# 0 580 464 017. What confuses me is that some on-line sellers list this specific fuel pump good for a 1980 to 1984. A rubber hose going to the fuel pump was kinked. Can that blow the pump? Basically in a nutshell, it appears that I have electricity going to the fuel pump, I have gas and the filter is not blocked. Should the fuel filter make a "hum" when directly connected to 12v? Polarity is correct. What is the recommended fuel pump for an 85 928? Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! ![]() |

Mine makes plenty of noise when its running.
Previous owner may have put in whatever was handy, best to use the correct pump. |

Fuel pump will run (and hum) w/ 12 volts.
A couple pumps were used, know your engine # before purchase. P.P. has all of them. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/more_info.cgi?pn=928-608-104-01-M14&catalog_description=Fuel%20Pump%2C%20%39%32%38%20% 28%31%39%38%30%2D%38%36%29%20Each%20 My guess-- replace pump. Good luck, John

Thanks for the insight and the quick replies.
I will get a new Bosch fuel pump that is correct for my car. Just a quick question will the engine# be the same as the VIN#? I will update when the new pump is installed. Thanks again for all your input!!! Last edited by dingo; 07-05-2009 at 09:37 PM.. Reason: add info |

I live near 928Intl, and fuel pump is easy to replace, so I have no problems buying used as long as its from a good vendor. Most of the time on electrical stuff I do buy new, but easy to swap parts I may buy a used to trouble shoot, then look for a deal on a new part at my leisure.
Last 4 digits of VIN is the serial number for the car, the motor ID and trans ID are usually close, but not matching, and by close +- 200 maybe. |

I did exactly what DanglerB did and I actually did buy used from 928 Intl, although their used parts warranty is great and shipment to San Diego is normally next day, I was one of those ones chasing fuel issues and got a bunk one (sporadic). Troubleshooting this pretty much cost me at least a few weeks. After researching, I was able to find a brand new Bosch for not much more than I paid used and I know it will work. Certain things I will buy used and some I will never do again. This is just my real story and opinion.
