the 82us issue is....... i swear on the porsche bible to tell the truth,........... heres the issue to perfectly running. the very first time when ready to fire it up cranked over and started right up stayed in car couple seconds looking at gauges, buttons, fuses ok all is good, no smoke. get out of car and hoovering over engine fuel, air, spark, lines ok all is good, no smoke. radiater coolant, fan oil level ok all is good, no smoke. the idling was smooth all good running over 1000rpm didnt want the car running to long its first time so it was like 10min then shut off quick, clean up a bit and wanted to really get idle little bit lower to 8-900 car wont start tried few times listening to how hard and fast/strong its cranking, battery strong, fuel pump running, no throttle til fourth time 1/4 throttle doesnt seem like it needs any gas pedal punching though, it just wont start, let it rest, hoovered over eng a few more minutes, and tried it again, starts right up, could drive it to china and back doesnt matter how long once it gets shut off wont restart for 10-15 min til cools off. if i park and run it cold til it reaches the op temp and shut it off needs to cool before restarting. will start cold shut off turn on so long as it stays under warm up temp starts and starts and starts. all the mentionable here, the things to try, test or that fail and replace have been done with no success, the fuel injector are the only thing untouched and unknown condition, sent them out to be cleaned, and reinstalled after resoldering new connector to harness,(all broken and to be sure good contact now) freshening up the finj system, (unknown seating, spraying all new now) now upon starting like the very first time again starts runs 10 sec or so keeps conking out got to one minute tops just by restart and it wanting to run alittle bit longer each time, it was the finj relay, now runs but terrible really, the idle is stable at 600 any lower conks out and higher conks out no throttle or touch of throttle. at 600 can have throttle or no throttle and stays running. there is just no power there.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247021530.jpg |

After careful consideration I think its the ...... . . . . . . . . Fuel, spark, or compression. Warm up the motor to normal operating temp, connect the timing light to #1 spark plug wire, pull both vacuum lines off the distributor, set timing to (I'm not sure, one spot in wsm says 23, another 31) degree BTDC at 3000 rpm, not to exceed 36 degrees at 5000 rpm. If that isn't possible, tell us what the timing is at all the rpm's you can make it go. Idle should be 8 to 10 degrees BTDC. When it won't start, pull a plug or two and see if its wet or smells like gas. Check the compression while its still warm. |

For your problem, I was wondering if the fuel your using is good? Next time it wont start, try the ether spray into the intake see if it starts. If no good then try holding the pedal to the floor. and crank it |

+1 Mrmerlin, If not for the fact that you were able to drive it (and it ran good till shut off) then wont start. Those symp. all point to old or water in fuel. I dont drive mine in the harsh ND winters so it sits in an unheated portion of my shop. I found out the hard way (if not left w/ close to full tank of fuel) how much condensation can enter fuel system. If your tank is empty enough. Try 8-10 gallons of fresh 91oct. fuel, and some fuel de-icer. It will take some time to flush out old fuel at idle so be patienced. Good luck, John |

Won' t Start Had a very similar problem, after much checking and replacing parts, it turned out to be the relay for the FI. Contacts must have been burnished or something since it would start and run sometimes. Also had the 10 minute wait issue. |

sounds like Vapor locking or fuel pressure lose (pressure regulator) to me...does it only when warm...then starts when cooled off.. |
|
Lisa..did you get my PM? |
|
im on with that old fuel out 8-10gals in be back danglerb do you think im doing what you tell me incorrectYL hell no, though u are correct, but something more stupid like going on here i think. kiwi yeah got pm with car parting parts, gotcha. |
|
Don't know about you, but I am having fun, so doesn't matter whats wrong or how long it takes. ;) |

did drain fuel, put in fresh 8 or so gal, new fuel inj relay, what i did find a bit bigger hose (what is this hose called) with a busted area(replacing). way down under fuel pres reg will u verify too that above red tape on hose that is fuel pres reg, correct? now my symptom while air cleaner, not bolted back on but try start up with 1/4 throttle or will stall ran it for while 7-8 minutes will rev and idle much much better but tons and tons of smoke billowing out exhaust (hope that clears up) a major thing i believe in running it i must of reached op temp and the car is restarting, but takes the 1/4 throttle, at operating temp for the get go it would not restart after reaching op temp and now i believe it is, car off and real quit now after its 5-10 minute run. sounds like a drip drip drip drip pinging onto the heat shield under neath but not to ground around the middle to back of car something is driping into the part/shields there. water, gas, oil. going to run it again few yrs more minutes again hoping the exhaust clearing, yes through months of working on and running it to its slight ability, coolant, oil, or whatever may be burning off of settled stuff, ????? serious there is no way possible that if i stuffed a rag in the intake , the motor would suck it in, if it got started forgettin it was there for a second, .....could it, where would it go, |

well just started again smoke clearing ,running rough, 5-6 min but smoke is from the muffler box like a fire was burning inside it. will take it off and check it out mice nest, or lol my intake rag, OMG it was smoken smoken smoken. disconnected battery quickly and real scare that it was just going to ungulf itself, hmmm heat was like a wood burning stove temp radiating there. whats the red taped hose there called , theres so many like hoses in the diagram i have that i cant figure the placement and what there connecting to and from. Just gonna get length of hose from auto parts but what parts is it connecting to and from and is that where the fpreg above that red taped hose is on the 82us.. |
|
Red tape is air injection for the heads, or maybe something with the EGR, I forget. (Euro and US do different stuff with the ports in the heads). Think of the engine as the most powerful vacuum cleaner ever, yes it would suck a rag in mess up all sorts of bits on the throttle etc. on its way through. What color is the smoke, and be careful. ;) |
|
smoke not white grey drk grey, ?mufler think i can fish a hose on vac and vac anything out i dont know whats inside muff how the baffle setup is to know if vac could work enough to make a difference . or if a cat converter piece could of broke off and in muff. |
|
Can you easily disconnect the muffler from the system? It is very possible that piece of honeycomb broke off and is blocking or restricting exhaust flow. I had that on a Ford Escape once. Loss of of power big time. Or if your not too close neighbors, yank the exhaust off in front of the Cats and see if that helps. Be careful on running it this way for too long as it can cause a fire hazard. This is "just" for testing. |

yeah im taken muf off it was a job with the bolt placement there if i remem, tire off and all. thanks ice (it is diverter hose) got the red taped hose off but piece of rod it was connected to bottom side just fell to ground when hose come off diverter --- under neath theres the rod and other end is connected to the rod running along cat with 4-5 inch rubber wobbly hose clamped on each end. ISNT THERE A PROPER FITTING CONNECTING THE TWO giving the red taped hose to diverter/rod more strength than holding it up with just the hose , maybe a bracket broke that keeps rod from falling through once hose comes off it. or a fitting at cat would strengthen vs the rubber hose just letting it flop right down. think theres a few area issues to fix, prob do in front of cat too, if not for anything but a morning praise song to the neighbors lol no none to close but lake may carry the tune and gather a few |
|
wait if im taken muff off how am i getting to cleaning out inside box and sure it is clean, just air comp ? when i did put exhaust sys together never thought too much just shook bang and rattled anything out of it and bolted on, car was running and driving so whatever happening just started |

the muff off and hose off intake still not on for startup starting thick black smoke with nothing restricting all power smooth running, so would say its the muffler, restricting? they dont make the check valve hose anymore replace with? the concern would be in just getting straight hose, kinking. muffler any blow through to clear it up air, water. rip it apart clean and weld |
