Shifter Adj 1979 5 spd
Lately it seems that I have to move the shifter pretty far left in order to engage 1st and reverse, so much so that the shifter is rubbing up against the left edge of the console opening. The 4-5 shift is pretty much in the middle (you'd think the shifter should be angled slightly to the right when in 4th or 5th gear).
I know the front cup on the shift linkage is not an issue, no up or down free play on the shifter, but there is some free-play left and right. I'm trying to understand how the rear shift coupler functions. It appears to slide in over the shifter selector shaft on the transmission and is held in place by 2 set screws. My first step is to go in there to make sure the set screws are still tight, but as far as repositioning the shifter so the R and 1 shift is not angled so far to the left, is it as simple as loosening the set screws on the rear shift coupler, moving the shifter slightly to the right and then re-tightening the set screws? From the pictures I've seen, it doesn't appear the set screws position themselves against any kind of detent on the shift selector shaft. |

That set screw does have a detent for it. It's the tube with a clamping collar forward of that you need to adjust. I think it's a 13mm wrench needed, one for the bolt and one for the nut.

What about if you just lean further to the left in your seat as you shift? Some people put their head out the window and have great results.

Too busy shifting to stick my head out the window, sounds more like something an auto trans driver would do when his A/C is inop!

I have the same issue. I recently replaced the coupling and cone srew (with tranny still mounted) and when I had it all back together I ended up in the same boat as you. The WSM says to lean the shifter 2-3 degrees to the left and twist the coupling to the left before tightening everything up. I did so, and I think that is why it goes so far to the left now. It was a b**** to get the shifter in the right position, crawl under the car, and then twist the coupling counter-clockwise and keep it there, while tightening down the 13mm nut at the same time. So I have just left it like it is - not bad, just takes some getting used too.
