slight mis or gearbox problem at speed?

hi all, i just bought a 928 s4, its 1989. the car drives great with no problems. the only thing i notice, if i push her on when it gets to about 4500 - 5500 it lifts great but depending on the gear it seems like it is kicking down a gear or trying to, it will die in power for a milly second then keep going, its the same feeling as if you were say in 4th and put your foot to the floor for it to kick down a gear. it does not seem to do it in second gear (ie, if i shift it to second on the auto box), it will run all the way to the rev limiter with out missing a heart beat.but it will do it if i shift it to 3rd. and it only does it if i give her legs! if i take it easy it wont do it. i cant decide if its a gearbox problem or a fuel/spark problem? any ideas? cheers thomas

sounds like a combination of several things-

aftermarket trans kickdown switch may help.

check throttle linkage for proper adjustment.

fuel delivery may be lacking (fuel pumps, clogged filters, etc)

does this happen when you manually downshift at high RPM?

could this be transmission slippage at downshift due to age or ???

how many miles/kilometers are on the car?

Its generic advice, but any mischief from the automatic transmission and a good start is to change the fluid and filter and make sure the level is correct.

to check the level first you need to find the trans fluid tank,
It is on the right side of the car next to the pan, it is usually dirty so you should clean the tank on the front so you can see whats inside.
If you lay down and look just in front of the rear tire you will see it. Once the tank is clean start the car and run the shift selector through all of the quadrants. then put it back into park with E brake on with a light get under the car and look at the tank.
Note the car must be level to do this check, if its low then add as necessary use Dextron 3 or 4.

The engine cut out is a normal thing though you shouldnt be able to feel it.
When the trans is shifting under full power, The LH cuts the ignition for a millisecond to let the trans shift and thus reduce the amount of wear
