Engine question
I am not in the market yet, but what price should i expect when searching for a 82 928 engine?
While i don't care if its a racing fast engine, i just want one that runs strong for fun driving. What is the level of difficulty when replacing the engine? The car i am looking at has had the engine taken out to be rebuilt. I would guess it's cheaper to find a good running engine vs. rebuilding one. thoughts? jpc

Well, I bought one for $250 4 miles away from my house, then sold the EFI Parts off it for $200 on eBay. $50 Final answer!

Nope. Just saying, I was at the right place at the right time. I know there was a rebuilt short block at the same time, but didn't want to deal with cylinder heads and gaskets.
The engine I bought had no history on it when I bought it from a Porsche Dismantler, but had all the signs of a recent rebuild. I took a chance and prospered.

Sometimes you can even get an early block free.
![]() Lets consider three types of early 928 motor; recently wrecked decent shape driven regularly, used to run great, but not in the last few years, and needs rebuilding. Oops, my mistake, ALL of those motors need rebuilding because they are almost 30 years old mostly with original seals etc. The first one might be ok, no serious leaks like head gaskets for thousands more miles, just minor stuff enough to keep the bottom coated with oil etc. My view its a waste of money when you have the motor out anyway not to refresh the whole block, including pulling the heads and replacing valve guides and head gaskets. OTOH if the rings, bores, and bearings look good, I wouldn't replace them. |

So, on that note, Does anyone have a nice 4.7Leu core motor wasting space around the garage? I woulden't mind building a spare "warmed up " 300+ hp motor, for when my 4.5Lus motor is ready for R&R.
