Adapter for 928 engine to 911 engine?
Hello All,
I am usually on the 911 board, but thought you guys might know best on this one. It's a shot in the dark, and I'm reasonably sure the answer is no, but.... I recently bought an OEM Porsche engine stand (#9127) from an old VW shop that was closing down, and I though it was a heavy duty version (7 arm instead of 5) of a normal 911 stand. It came with a nice aluminum machined adapter piece (#9197) for the 944, but my question is: Does anyone make an adapter ring for a 911 engine to fit #9127, or do I just break down and buy a 911 stand when the time comes to rebuild my mill? Thanks |

911 Mount - engine stand
Many foreign car shops had the VW engine mounting stand designed for air and water cooled 4 cylinder engines. The Porsche 911 engine stand/yoke must be able to handle the longer and considerably heavier weight of the six cylinder engine.
There are a couple of options. 1 - use a generic roll-a-way engine stand / mounting arms / yoke/ metric bolts. Cut off several short 2x4's of various lengths to support the far end of the rotating 911 engine as the rebuild progresses. 2 - modify / weld up a home made yoke. 3 - buy the correct engine mounting yoke. After looking over a collection of Porsche engine mounting yokes at a shop in Dallas a few years ago I was able to borrow several for use as patterns. I drilled and welded one circular piece of 1/2 inch plate to some generic engine mounting arms for use in rebuilding 911 engines. The rotating yoke assembly can be plugged into a standard roll-a-way engine stand. Although a bit heavy compared to a factory mounting plate - this has worked fine for several 911 rebuilds with no issues. A friend of mine got really industrious during his rebuild and cut off a short piece of pipe as a rotating base, then machined up a really nice looking yoke. He later sold it before I knew it was available. Perhaps someone close to you has a 911 engine yoke around that is no longer in use. ![]() Good Luck - Michael Last edited by JK McDonald; 01-05-2010 at 05:45 PM.. |

Thanks...
I may try to make my own adapter for the 928 stand. It's built much stronger (7 arms, thick mount) than a 911 factory stand, I'm sure I will be able to fabricate some kind of an adapter.
It may not be as "pretty" as the 944 adapter (than machined aluminum is gorgeous, hangs on my shop wall), but it should do the job. Thanks again, Mark |
