Replacement speakers

Say, has anyone replaced the stock speakers? Mine seem to have lost all bass and are from 1986. I would like to replace in same mounting areas with better ones. I have a new JVC radio/DVD installed. I am just looking for better sound not any boom box you can hear 3 blocks away!!!

Doesn't Crutchfield have recommendations? You can always buy elsewhere for pricing. Just make sure you can use your old covers if you have them. My OB doesn't have covers, just holes in the panel.

Yes, I am checking them out for sure. Just wondering what some others have done.

The foam surround has rotted away, a whole generation of speaker used poor quality surrounds (between the paper cone and metal frame), but good news is they are easy to have replaced. Shop here in Santa Ana I think does them.

Many like the speakers from MB Quart as replacements.

Size is a bit of an issue, but nothing like the pain it is for the older cars which require super thin small magnet speakers behind the flat non grille door panels.

In hindsight, I would just have the old speakers reconed, and never again use any car stereo installer.

Yes, this is true. There is actually a local guy to me that does that work. I met him when I was picking up his free Railroad Ties that he posted on Craigslist. This was a few years ago but they are out there (speaker rebuilders).

Although my Blau Speakers are still fine for now, if they cease to work, then an Aftermarket is the way I would go. Like these Infinitis for $70

Crutchfield says it fits.

I installed the JVC myself, did all rewiring and soldering. I am a former test set engineer, been in electronics all my life. Yes, speakers can be reconed for sure but I think there are better, newer designed speakers out now. Crutchfield has some they say will fit.

Alpine SPS-600 Type-S 6-3/4" 2-way car speakers — fits in 6-1/2" or 6-3/4" openings at Crutchfield.com for the rear pillers possibly.

I used those exact alpines listed in harborman's post. I installed them into the factory grills with little modification. essentially what i did was drill 4 small holes through the factory grills to mount the new speaker to it then reinstalled the grills using the factory screws. I had some small button head allens with nuts at hand so that is what I used, though it would have been less obvious if I had used black. I may switch then out for black at a later date, if I ever get caught up with the more critical issues on my list. I'll try to take a couple pics of them installed later today and post them.

Below is a write up I did. Feel free to check it out. I used Diamond Audio D343 and they fit exactly in the factory location no drilling needed!

Nice write up and pictures! So how much improvement did you get over stock speakers?? Actually I looked at my rear ones and they seem to be in great shape, but OLD!! How is your bass and mid range response now? Is there a dramatic improvement over the stock speakers?

Below is a pic of mine Alpines in the factory covers.man the flash makes all the dust dirt and imperfections show up. Anyway, you can see the heads of the allens I used to mount the speakers to the grill before reinstalling the grills in the car. These bould be mounted in the same manor as Dan951 used. also in the install thread Dan linked you can see before installed the ring from the old speaker where the mounting bolts I installed could have been installed instead of using the old speaker ring as he did.

As for the sound; I would say there was a significant improvement, but I do not believe the shape and size of the rear speaker cavities promotes a lot of base. this seemed to be the consensus of many of the posts I read and that if you truely want serious base the real answer it to add a sub. I'm no audiophile so I'm happy with what I've got now.

Ok, I got those installed, just like you did. I did however still use the small rear speakers that were stock along with the newer ones. In order for that to work, I removed the 33 ufD caps (still good) from the old speakers used to cross over to those in the rears and soldered them in place. You need to leave the new caps on the new speakers and put a cap on each speaker in addition feeding those rear ones. If you look at original speakers you will see how the capacitor is wired feeding in series to the one leg of the small midrange/tweeter at the rear. Because of impedence of the new speaker you cannot simply add the small rear ones to the capacitor feeding the new built in tweeter of the Alpines.

My new Alpines (SPS-600) are better since they are two-way as opposed to the original 6" ones, My old speakers were still good however so the increase in sound quality is better but not a drastic improvement. A good CD to test with is "Best of Four play" if you like jazz. It has a good selection of high's and deep bass notes.

I have those in my 78. They sound great. They fit with a little bit of the bottom of the cover cut away, but they do not look stock in the car. You will not be able to re-use the original covers. I have heard there are some MB Quarts that you can, but I have never seen it.

They did fit!!! All you have to do is drill 4 new holes in the grill as pointed out above. You won't even notice the changes. Look at the posts above.

I posted before reading all of the other posts, and have not followed all of the links, but the ones in the pictures with the four new bolts are the lower rear quarter panels. I put the Infinities mentioned above in the doors. And since mine is a '78 I do not have original covers on any of my speakers, they were mounted behind the vinyl with perforated holes.

EDIT: The originals were mounted behind the vinyl, but the new ones are mounted thru my new vinyl.

When I did my speaker install I also replaced the door and rear deck speakers at the same time. I installed Infinity Reference 4" 2ways in the doors in the factory locations and a matching set in the rear deck in the factory locations. These are 2way speakers so I did not reconnect the factory tweets in the doors they are now just hole fillers. I am running everything off a Pioneer DEH-P7000bt in-dash. To wire the speakers I ran the rear seat 6-3/4" Alpines (4 ohm) off the rear channel. And the for the 4" Infinities I ran the front and corresponding rear deck speaker in series. The Infinities are 2 ohm speakers and the head unit is designed for a 4-8 ohm load. by running the 4" speakers in series on the front channel it gave a matched 4 ohm load for the front channel and rear. This also allowed me cut all the lows from the 4" speakers with out affecting the channel for the 6-3/4"s.

Nice job, I bet it sounds great. I am going to replace my door speakers at some point. They are still sounding good as my car has such low mileage. Yes you have to watch the impedence load on your amps. My JVC has 4 channels so each speaker is on it's own amp. The sound levels can be adjusted accordingly. You can do as you did, hook them in series. If in parallel it's (R1*R2)/(R1 + R2).
