At $347, that's much more obtainable than a hammer. And would pay for itself after 10 trips to my local mechanic.

my suggestion is to do a complete intake refresh This will usually cure most running problems for many years, also inspect the relays for corroded pins any that are corroded or smell burned should be opened

I've used John Speake's diagnostic tool, called the "Spanner". It has internal software that displays the fault codes and interprets them to English. ie: "Knock Sensor 2" would display for the rear sensor fault you describe. It lest you clear/reset the stored coades for the LH (EFI), EZK (ignition), PSD (rear diff controller '90+), ABS and airbag controllers. The firmware talks to other Porsches, and there's a cable adapter available that lets it talks to the '87-'88 928 that have more limited internal fault-storage capabilities. If you have an S4+, this tool is invaluable.
It's possible to swap the rear sensor without removing the intake, if you have small hands. However, if you've never had the intake off, you'll want to pull it and replace the oil vent and vacuum hoses, the knock, TPS and Hall sensors, the throttle switch and the idle air valve all at once. If the car has over 100,000 miles on it, a new or rebuilt MAF is in order also. The knock sensor fault is the first indicator of end-of-life for all of those under-manifold pieces.
