what's she worth today...

Ok guys, time for my annual, "think I might sell my 1984 928S, black/ black".

Good: rebuilt 4 speed auto transmission, smooth engine, excellent body, new spoiler, newer 4 tires, new battery, alternator, runs excellent.

Bad: No carpet, no radio, small items need attention: AC, dash crack

I'm thinking 4,800 dollars is a fair price for a straightbody, clean running black on black 84, please humor me and chime it with your estimate on the car's value..

Its a nice looking car in person, so "maybe" if you made it as pretty as possible and put a sign on it at Sharktoberfest you might get a nibble over $4k, depending on who sees it. As long as the weather stays hot the lack of AC will be a BIG issue.

Main trouble is that everybody I know looking for an early car wants a 5 spd.

I think It's worth $2,500 + or - the Total Mileage . Since you don't mention the Millage I expect It's High so Down from there
$2,000 ( @ 150 K ) $1,500 (over 150 K ) and so on
***************************************
On the other Hand any thing you sell is worth whatever you can get for it >>> but if your talking real Value then the above
Just lots of then on the net . If You want to put $1,000 in to it perhaps you can get $500 of it back just add that to the price . Carpets / Air and the like

Yeah, for that kind of money you might be able to go out and buy yourself a 1995 Toyota Camry with 200,000 miles.

Keep the 928!

I was looking at cars here with a friend the other day. There were few used cars on the lot and none more than 3 years old. Used car prices are quite high, thanks to our great leader and his "cash for clunkers" failure. Well it did one thing, removed some good cheap cars off the market. As to the Porsche, $4K sounds reasonable depending on other things with the car.

Keep it. It's mostly sorted and you'll have a very hard time finding one in the condition your's is in. My AC in my AC also didn't hold up. I suspect we needed to replace the o-rings since our's had R12 in it. I replaced my O-Rings on the Euro before getting it evaced and filled with R134 and it is still holding after 2 years.

And a Dash Crack is for sure not a minor job. I know personally that removing a Dash and getting it recovered and putting it back in is a time consuming job.

Keep the Porsche Al. Just think of it this way, you got a badass Supercar for selling that Girly Miata you had.

This car needs so little work it's not worth selling. Agree with 76 Targa, what else are you going to buy, even if you get top dollar for it.

I have a little different take on what's it's worth. The amount of money you'd spend to get an average 928 into the same condition your 84 is in would cost thousands of dollars, certainly more than $4800 .

I saw your car a couple years ago when MrGST drove it down to Leo's, it's a sweet ride. You've taken care of the transmission problem, if those few other issues you talked about were taken care of (AC and carpet), and if I had the money (I don't, I'm about as broke as the US Govt), I wouldn't haggle with you at $4800. Ok, maybe just a little to feel like I'm getting a deal from you.

The list of what doesn't need to be done is what makes your car worth $4800, to me at least. If I ever buy another 928, that's certainly the angle I would approach my purchase with.

Rjm65

Hey RJM65,

Yes, that was my neighbor glen who drove the car one day. Yes, the rebuilt transmission was rebuilt, and it shifts great now--all gears.

Let me know if you are ever drive up to La Costa, you can take it for a free joy ride on the highway -5. As you know, a well sorted 928 feels the best between 60 - 90 mph, and perhaps you can give me first hand knowledge/perspective on the car/price...

later,

I'll check in with you next time I make a trek up to North County. I've tried to make the get togethers up at the shopping center in the past, but I work Saturdays.
