fuel accumulator blowout
While trying to start the 928 to set the timing today, I smelled gasoline. Since I replaced the engine compartment fuel lines not long ago, that was the first place I checked. All good. I walked around to the back and that;s when I noticed a small puddle near the passenger rear tire. I pulled the wheel off, had my wife crank the engine while I watched, and that's when I saw fuel spurting out of the top of the fuel accumulator.
#1 What would cause this? #2 Is the accumulator bad, or is this what it is supposed to do if something is not right in the fuel system? ![]()

Corrosion? Did you try torquing down the connector?

There's a spring loaded diaphragm inside the accumulator that's designed to help the fuel system retain pressure after you shut down. When the diaphragm goes bad, you'll get the leak as you described.
I replaced mine about a month ago, mine didn't leak as bad as yours. There was never any puddle, just the top part of the accumulator felt moist to the touch. When I did pull the accumulator off, the top half was completely full of gas.

Holy s***! I just looked up the price of a new accumulator - over $400! Why do all the EXPENSIVE parts keep going out on my car? Brake booster, steering rack, alternator........

928 Ownership, parts and time and labor - Oh My
Hey Morriss – Welcome to the initial period of owning a 928 retro-fixer-upper. Don’t be discouraged - everyone goes through this period of shock and awe. Once you get past the ohhhh $@!# - it broke off, bleed off, twisted off or fell off period, the cost of eliminating these glitches will settle out. At one time or another, I think most of us have expressed your exact opinion on the sequential replacement of some parts as you try to keep the project momentum going. Just keep in mind the great times and satisfaction you will have in owning a relatively rare (and mysterious) super car. The other day as I left a local Bar-B-Q place a couple of Halliburton guys were looking over my car and asked if it was "Some kind of Testarossa or what ????
Good Luck, Michael ![]() |

I don't know about you guys, but that's why my shark is not my primary transpo. If it breaks, well, I guess it sits in the garage until I talk the Mrs. out of some parts money. LOL
