spark plug wires and radiator hoses
hey guys, I just did a resistance check on all of my plug wires, I am wondering if any of you guys have done this before and what numbers you got. I am just seeing if I need new wires or not,
coil wire 1.001 #1 2.85 #2 3.14 #3 2.96 #4 3.08 #5 3.12 #6 3.18 #7 2.92 #8 3.21 The other question I have is regarding the top box on the motor, I don't know what it is called but I think it is a plenum, It covers the throttle bottle. There is 8 rubber pieces that are there about the size of a radiator hose, My question is can I buy a straight piece of rad hose the same diameter and cut it into equal lengths and use it instead of buying the actual rubber that goes there. Has anyone done it before. Thanks |

Is radiator hose the same diameter? If it is, seems like it may work. Radiator hose is designed to handle super-high heat, seems it would hold up. But I'm not a current 928 owner, so don't listen to me.......seriously. ![]() |

Please tell us and/or place your year and type in the signiture.
Also, take a picture of the "box" you speak of. I believe you are speaking of the 8 spider legs and the rubber connectors. If so, they carry A/F mixture into the 8 cylinders. Jon

I think he has an 85-86
If I understand you correctly, yes they are called plenums. You have one on each side of the 85-86 engine. Rad hose, if you can find the right ID should work fine to replace the original rubber connectors. I have also seen silicone hose used but if your trying to save money that's probably not the way to go. According to the WSM plug wire resistance should be around 2.5k ohms. It seems to me that it is most commonly the insulation that breaks down on the ignition wires not the conductor. the easiest test there (if the car runs) is the water mist test in the dark to look for arcing. |

Sorry I forgot to mention the year and make, It is a 1982 928 S. Yes it is the plenum I am talking about. I have a buddy if mine that owns a rad iator shop and he works on everything from cars to tractor trailers so I will ask him if it is a good idea to do the rad hose thing and I will pass on to you guys what vehicles it will come off of, seems like a good cheap way to repair something.
As for the plug wires, I read on here that it should be around 2.5 k ohms. my multimeter reads in m ohms which I going to assume means mega ohms. Is there a huge difference between mega and kilo ohm. my numbers are in the ball park but I don't know if it is a huge difference or not after the conversion is done.

As for the difference mega Ohms and kilo Ohms - yes there is a significant difference. Kilo is 10 to the power of 3 (1000) and mega is 10 to the power of 6 (100.000), so a signicant difference. A reading of 1 Mohm would be 1000 Kohm. The other way around, 1 Kohm would be the same as 0,001 Mohm.
As for the spider plenum, as far as I see the system, the runners from the plenum donīt carry an air/fuel mixture - but only air up until the injectors. From the injectors on in its an air/fuel mix. An air tight connection between the plenum and the runners is therefore paramount to ensure correct A/F mix. If radiator hose would work - donīt see why not. |

The rubber on the 8 intake legs needs to be compliant to accommodate the expansion of the block, which is why the factory items have a bellow shape. A short section of radiator hose is going to be stiff, possibly forcing the ends to slide back and forth.

coil question and wires
Hey guys,
The other day I asked a question regarding ohms for my plug wires, but it was in mega ohms, I checked them today with Kilo ohms, In the book it says to check them with the plug as well, The values I got are listed below but without the plug in it, when I put the plug in it goes to zero. Am I doing something wrong. coil wire 1.001 #1 2.85 #2 3.14 #3 2.96 #4 3.08 #5 3.12 #6 3.18 #7 2.92 #8 3.21 I looked in the book also and did a coil check with the ohm meter, between terminal 1 and 15 should read .33-.46 ohm and I got .5, between terminal 1 and 4 should be 7-12 k ohms, I got over limit. Does my battery have to be in and connected to do this because mine is out on the charger, I don't think it has to be in but I am not 100% sure. If I am right does this mean that my coil is screwed, when my battery was good I was getting spark though, this is where I am confused. Thanks for your help

Leo,
I notice the Pacifico in the background...would that be 3 per spider leg?? ...I am looking forward to copyinig your silicon connectors as well as the hoses. It looks great out of the rig in addition to inside the bonnet. Jon
