Just cured the crap out of my tranny troubles!
My auto has shifted super hard since I bought it three months ago. I had a feeling it was wrong, but I had no Porsche reference to compare shifting quality.
So yesterday I've got the car in the air and I'm making another adjustment to the Bowden cable because it was hanging on to first gear way too long. I finish up the adjustment, but spend some extra time walking around under the car with a bright flashlight looking for anything wrong. I looked up over the torque tube just aft of the block on the passenger side and saw a metal vacuum tube with nothing attached to it. Looked a little deeper, and saw the hose that belonged to it attached to the other metal vacuum line. This four inches of vacuum line is a flexible coupler from one line to the other. I removed the heat shields to make room for my hands, pulled it out, spent some time fiddling with the new hose, finally got it all back together, test drive: tadaa!! The car's shift points are so smooth that I can't feel them. Perfectly seamless transition from one gear to the next. Plus the Bowden cable is adjusted correctly, now, too. I also replaced the vacuum line at the tranny. If there's another vacuum hose upstream I'll replace it, too. ![]() ![]() ![]()

since we are on the topic of tranny talk, I have a question about my 3 spd auto tranny. If I have it in 1st gear and give it some gas I can hear what sounds like to me like a bell ringing, I haven't heard this in any other car I have driven. I don't hear it in 2nd or 3rd gear or reverse. When I let off the throttle it does go away.

Vac Connections I believe are metal tubing all the way to the front of the Intake Spider. Vac hoses are what you are looking at and at the tranny side.
Yes, the Bowden misadjusted will shift like crap, ask me how I know. I actually blocked off that vac line back to the tranny as I like knowing my shift points. Yes, with the vac line connected, you barely feel it shifting.

On the 84 at least, there is a little rubber hose between the front of the TT and the engine compartment, then another longer piece back where he fixed this one.

I bet other things have improved now that you have eliminated a big vacuum leak.!!!Does the car idle better?, cruise works better? HVAC system work better?

Yep, it idles much better now. I just replaced the cap and rotor trying to fix the rough idle, and it helped performance very much, but nothing for the idle. Idle isn't perfect, I can still feel the car running, but it no longer stumbles and rumbles.
