Front wheel bearing service

What tool can be used to pull off the dust cover on the front hub to access the wheel bearings? I would like to repack mine but have had no luck removing the cover with the tools I have.

I use a big pair of tongue and groove joint adjustable pliers, and then rock the cap back and forth till it comes off.

I tried that before with no luck. The cap is stuck in there pretty tight. But if it worked for you, I will try it again if I can't find another way. Would spraying the cover where it fits into the hub with penetrating oil help?

Spray it first with a little PB Blaster.

I've actually used a small chisel and hammer on mine. Comes off like a charm.

A hammer and a reasonably sized pin punch works like a charm on my car.

Lean the punch against the the brake rotor and drive the dust boot out by its groove. Give the dust boot a careful beat, turn the hub, say 2/5 of a complete turn, give the boot a beat from the new angle. Repeat until the boot comes off.

Don't beat too hard, that will just damage the dust boot.

Success! Thanks Peter Bull, I used a socket extension and hammer worked it back and forth until it cam out. Now I have to stop at carquest tomorrow to pick up new hub seals, then I can clean, repack, and adjust the bearings so there will be no more play!
