Model year question
Hi guys, This is my first post on the forum. I'm not a new 928 guy (928's RULE) but have a question I hope someone can answer. I recently sold my '83S

My 86 is from March and has true dual exhaust, twin-dizzies, Big Black 4-piston brembos - the lot! S4 suspension as well.
Can't see what the problem is? ![]()

Hi ![]() As said above, if you have twin dizzies and twin exhausts and S4 suspension and 4 pot calipers, then its NOT an S ..its an S2 (the most powerful of the 16 valve engines) at 310 hp...same as mine, lucky you ![]() All the best Brett ![]()

Strange. That's a low VIN number, too. Maybe tourist delivery got ROW equipment? (All '86 ROW have US '86.5 upgrades.)
Nicely optioned. '86.5 5-speeds are the cream of the crop for the original body style. All you need now is a decent chip... ![]() PorKen Products For 5-speeds, I just added an optional dual rev-limit, 'no-lift' shifting to the 'racing' version of the chipset!

I'd like to see a low, side profile picture of the car.
Which type of jackpoints does it have? |

Landseer is right. The easy way to tell a true '86.5 from a distance is to check the rear jack point. It is square, and hangs down below the weld seam. Earlier bodies have round jack points which are hidden by the weld seam.

Thank you for all of the information guys.
![]() The jack points are round (86), but I am still wondering why the car would have the 86.5 upgrades when it is an early 86? I'm glad it does have the better brakes and exhaust though. No complaints. Thanks again. |

You can retrofit the brakes, and suspension to the earlier body.
You cannot fit a '86.5 (ROW '86) exhaust system, though, the middle mufflers (resonators) are too big. The back seats were raised, fuel lines rerouted, etc. to fit them. It's probably aftermarket, or a modified '88-'90 small resonator system. |

I don't know if March qualifies as an early '86, but mine has square jackpoints, and the rear-most one sticks down a bit, just like on the beautiful white one

All 1986 928's have S4 brakes, suspension and twin exhaust *except* the first 900 or so made for the US market. The only '86's with the early style brakes/suspension/exhaust are the North American '86's with VIN serial numbers from 61 to 937. The next production car after 937 was serial 1000, the first of the upgraded 86's for the US market. So you don't have to worry about your car.. it has all the good bits ![]()

Funnily enough, your post prompted me to run a query on the database to determine the split of 86 engines between 32v and 16v.. Production numbers by engine for Model Year 1986 M28.21 488 (16V) M28.22 1004 (16V) Total 16V 1492 M28.43 742 (32V) M28.44 2080 (32V) M28.45 109 (32V) [standard in Australia/Switzerland, and found on some German cars as a customer selected option] M28.46 306 (32V) M 65 (32V) [these are records in the database which don't specify engine type, but are all North American VIN's thus presumed to be 32V] Total 32V 3237 So actually, in '86, S2's are in the minority, and the superior 32V engine was much more common ![]() (well ok, so I'm kidding about superior.. both types have their merits)

You learn something every day in here!
![]() And I know it has all the good bits, just didn't know the difference was so big between US and EU cars, body-wise..

"Production numbers by engine for Model Year 1986
M28.21 488 (16V) What's the difference? M28.22 1004 (16V) Total 16V 1492" Nice to know if you're one in a 1000 or one in 500, but in either case, much rarer than I thought ![]() And no, 32v are not superior, just different! ![]()

Delivery date 12-05-86.
VIN on Fender WP0ZZZ927GS860069 (ROW?) Why would the VIN on the pillar be different? (JBO) Here are a few pic's. Do not believe brakes or exhaust were added as aftermarket. Bought the car from the 2nd owner and he was more of a polish it and drive once a month guy more than a tech guy. Thanks ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Sharkbit; 09-03-2010 at 12:14 AM.. |

Thanks for the pics! Good looking car.
It must be a recycled factory prototype '86.5 or something. It has all the goodies, including aluminum rear toe arm mounts, but the old style jack points. (IE. if you get Liftbars, you'll need the 'round' style. ![]()
