Pulling GT engine
So I'm well into pulling the engine from a 90 GT and I'm completely hung up. I was following the manual's instructions, but it seems to be a mishmash of several years and mine isn't one of them. At the moment it SEEMS like the major problem is the pressure plate hanging up on the torque tube bell housing. When I first noticed that, I started trying to remove it, but now I'm stuck somewhere in between where I can't get the pressure plate off and as a result the situation with it hanging up in the bell housing is even worse. Has anybody else gotten stuck here? Is there a trick that I'm missing? I did an 82 928 and it was relatively easy--an afternoon's work--but I just can't figure this one out.

The clutch pack(pressure plate and clutch disk) should have come out before you loosened the bell housing. It should drop right out through the area where the bottom bell housing is (6 bolts)

you have to remove the clutch pack.
BUT first make 3 bent U spacers put one on each pin that comes out the back of the PP then remove the PP bolts, this will let you be able to remove the clutch release arm from the upper ball pivot then the shaft coupler bolts are removed and the pack drops down be careful its heavy

I would appreciate an explanation for the function of the shims/spacers required before removing the pressure plate bolts. I can't visualize the mechanics of it all. What is different about a 928 clutch assembly as compared to a typical unit (911) where you simply unbolt the pp from the flywheel and remove the pp and disc?

installing the U spacers will in effect keep the PP from fully releasing ,
this would then give extra clearance to move the clutch release arm off of the ball at the top of the Bell housing . The extra clearance is that the TOB isnt going forward as far , remember the clutch in the 928 is operated backwards compared to most other designs. IE to release the clutch you push the release arm rearwards This info is also in the WSM should you choose to peruse
