Cam timeing Marks 1980 US 928

Hello All : where are the Cam Timing Marks for the timing belt Drivers side ?
Tore down my long time sitting 928 with bad water pump it was easy .
the impeller had froze and was all rusted up > belt backside just slipped on the pulley
************************************************** *****
Can Someone post clear Photos of the 5 to 8 cylinder cam Timing mark ? for the belt
I can see the V cut in the gear on both Cams
I can see the Marker on the Passenger side Housing Clearly " V shaped mark "
But on the Drivers side ? I see a small raised area near the distributor ? and then 3 different Round raised marks going around clockwise I don't know what is the correct mark ?
a Photo would be great >. I looked at some photos on the net but they are not clear at all ?

Thanks much >. porken and MP Dano
Not sure if those are like a 1980 >> well check in the morning light
(1) the top Left Photo looks like the passenger side on mine ! with the Raised V shape sticking out toward the Cam Gear >> ( in fact I noted it before I removed the belt and marked the gear with paint )
(2) Bottom Left Photo : now is that the drivers side ? looks like the distributor just above it
I am guessing that's the Drivers side .
******************************
The 2 photos on the Right TOP and BOTTOM > to be honest ? I am not sure what year and side they are ?
Perhaps there is some grease on my Housing covering a V cut going inward rather then sticking out like on the Passenger side ? I did not notice such on my 1980 in fact no V cut at all on that ( drivers ) side ?
Here is a Photo I took this PM of the passenger side > Thats very clearly the corect marks and line up
DSC07209
I tried to take a Photo of the "Drivers " side But could not tell where the mark in the housing is ? All I can guess is that the V is a cut that go's the other way toward the firewall rather then sticking out like on the Passenger side ? . Also that perhaps it is filled with grease and I can not see it until cleaned better . humm
Thanks everyone >> I am still not clear on it but perhaps after a close inspection shall be.
( the water Pump froze after sitting 15 years . Metal Impeller )
Like a Peek ?
DSC07203
Little Closer Perhaps
( got the motor running with the belt just slipping "Back Side" but without the Pump turning )
DSC07204
Think I can clean that up ? < Joke >
Perhaps I well post Photos of the

You probably need to pull the heads.
When the cooling system goes acidic it is notorious for corroding the block/head interface on these engines and breeching the cylinder/waterway separation.

Yes, my pump on my Euro was similar. Pull heads as last straw since it's an engine pull. Flush your system out good, clean those cam gears of all grease and surrounding areas. You should rebuild your tensioner, but again I didn't rebuild mine but I just replaced the rubber cap and clamp. New bolts for your Water pump. Find those timing marks as they are there exactly as posted by porken. You'll need a proper belt tensioner (Kempf Tool).

Post pics as you go. Run it and making sure to monitor temps and run it some more, then run it some more. Post pics of your Engine as I am not sure if an 80 US is CIS or Electrical. CIS hates to not being run.

Also, did you drop and flush the fuel tank yet? 15 years no runno, you MUST do this.

IIRC you pulled yours, didn't you?

Best to address this now, rather than risk hydrolock.

Oh, that's right. My Original Euro engine was seized. Old age and loss of memory. Either way, I had to on mine and then junked it. He's already got it started and it was running. Either way, it's totally up to you. It's just what I would do

Well, that's a good point.

And to be fair, let me disclose that I don't have personal experience with this failure.

I have been religiously, no, make that "like a cult member", following the engine posts for nearly 4 years though. Its come-up before.

Another place to look for damage at this point is the solid metal tube that acts as a heater hose, running down the passenger side fender. Its also carbon steel and might be rusty. These radiators cant be rodded out, so a good suckdown , backwards, using a shopvac makes sense at this point.

Good luck with this. I love seeing them brought back to life.

Hello All:
Yes I well take some photos this am > I want to show just what 5 / 8 housing marks I have
Pull the heads I don't think so >> the Car run's good so far ,I drove it with the bad water pump.
After I ran the motor for a few Min's several times it would begin to Heat up and I shut it down.
Then after starting it again all of a sudden with a loud noise ( I was working with it under the hood) I hear this noise front of motor > then a water Pump Noise >LOUD WATER PUMP NOISE .
Then I noted the Water Temp Immediately dropped to about 25% of the gauge and I could feel the motor running cool now >> IE: the pump started turning and the water circulated.
As a long time Mechanic I know the drill ( but not the timing marks Location on the 5 / 8 Cylinders ) > so I well Post Photos of what I have on that .
Compression is 180 + or - 5 Lbs > in all cylinders
If Interested > I turned the motor by hand ( Plugs out ) after inserting 2 oz's ATF fluid in each cylinder > let the car sit 2 days and turned again some >
Now I hooked the Car to my truck and towed it up and down our road ( Live in the country and we have a private road ) my wife pulling me > Popped the Clutch in third gear plugs out up and down the road >> Checked the compression It was prefect > I smiled
Then after Electrical Repairs / Tank Clean out / fuel Line Purge / I pressurized the Injectors disconnected from the heads but still on the fuel rails > with 12 volts to each Injector I got the Injectors going one by one. Primed the Air Flow and started the motor and with some priming got if going on Its own after a bit .
The Downside with this is you get a lot of Smoke for about 15 Min's of running so know your neighbors well ha ha
Photo of Timing belt showing worn off surface ( from frozen pump ) before the pump broke free and started turning again Lucky the belt did not brake
DSC07208
That's a great Tip "Landseer" about the "Another place to look for damage at this point is the solid metal tube that acts as a heater hose, running down the passenger side fender. Its also carbon steel and might be rusty." I well check that out !! the Radiator is new and the car came with many new parts in the back of it >> They just could not make it run > Porsche Shop Oakland > Was The Circuit Board and 2 Relays > pulled down the board / repaired it.
Photo on the way home after my wife made the owner a offer of $300 " Accepted "
DSC05597
It's no show car but the running gear is great and with a new clutch also ! I now know the water pump went and they parked it .
DSC05598
I expect to find more problems but in fact the motor sounds sweet and the 5 speed is tight.

Excellent summary on what has been done. Now we know how to proceed with info. Also, don't lose those plates (Blue Californias). Keep them when you register it. You for sure live up North as it never gets that green in SoCal
