Ok decided to start my own thread since I have so many questions. I need to replace my harness and my 14 pin connection. From neils thread I gathered some info

I pulled these from the Alt side (forward) such that I pulled the wires through the harness holder (that I could not un-bolt) so they hung under the ALT. Then disconnected the Alt wires connections and holder. Then pulled the bundle up from above by the Dizy. I believe I removed the sleeve that covers/protects the wires as they curve from the Starter area before the hard to get to harness holder so I could pull the wires.

Then went to the 14 pin and hot post and disconnected those leaving the wires in the 14 Pin top block (wrapped with tape so I knew orientation). I disconnected the right forward passenger head grounds while taking the harness loop off the same bolt. I then un-wrapped the harness part that went to the WUR and SAV (red/white wires pin 7) such that they stayed connected to the terminations (not at pin 7) and these two wires were loose next to the other wires that stayed in their wrapping. I then pulled the harness with the 14 pin and Hot post wire away from the car...

...then unsolder and re-solder one by one and/or cut and crimp each wire, wrap with the silicon tape, I also put the wrapped wires in red conduit. I separated the Alt and oil in one bundle and the starter wires in a second bundle...

I also put the dizy green wire in the conduit.

Also MPDano had a great link. Porsche 928 Forums dot com - View topic - Pics of my First 928 and Current Project

now some questions is there anything to replace the 14 pin connector something newer? If not then I need to buy both sides female and male as both of mine are cracked.

Ill need to get the wire after work and tape to label everything. And crimps? Anything else?

And if I fail I can always ship it to one of you to do for me Pics tonight. Thanks everybody. Believe me if I had discovered this community years ago...

I ordered the 14 pin top plug from Roger, and will start a remake soon. I plan to replace each 2 pin connector, run all new wires, etc. I look forward to watching your progress.

I will let you guys decide if I need both male and female, I know I can get the male here on pelican but from memory I believe both are cracked. Car has been sitting for the last three years while I was away at school. Got home payed for the water pump and tI'ming belt to be done, new alt, batt drove for like two weeks then alt stopped charging my cluster is very bad, and my 14 pin connection is terrible, I had no idea it ran great. I'm not a pro like everyone else on here but I am also excited to see what I'm capable of. I'm sure with the support of everyone on here I can get it done. You guys truly are an inspiration.

You can order the complete block top/bottom caps with the top and bottom blocks which include the pins (male) and sockets (female) from 928 Intl. as one unit. It appears Roger may have them as well.

the backside thats facing the fender actually doesnt look bad the colors are clear and they look to be fine. So I will just have to replace the connectors and go from the side facing engine and forward.

Read my description earlier in this thread...
you can start at the ALT but need to disconnect the wires at the Starter as well that are part of the forward cable harness in order to pull it up from below. The big yellow from pin 14 goes there as does blk/yel wire from pin 10 and a part of the big red from ALt to Starter 30

So, the Big red from the hot post goes to ALT B+ and then to Starter 30 should be re-wired...WYAIT...they are most likely hard and brittle.

Do it once, right!

Jon

Jon, I definately want to do it right. I got this car six years ago when I was 16 and wish I had found this site then. I can do simple maintenance but all of this is new to me. I read your first description and it was very detailed only probelm was I dont know where these things are. I was under the car yesterday and I think I know where the starter is now so I do plan to disconnect it. They follow down to the alternator then split and go towards the drivers seat area right? I plan to clean first then disconnect and label everything and pull them up through the top.

In general, anybody doing this needs to check wiring diagrams for their model year.

There were a couple of changes to the pin layout over time.

definetly confrim the wire diagram, though for the underside harness elements should be same. diagrams for your MY Manuals

Clean first and let dry then label all end points per diagram reference (i.e.: Starter 30, Starter 50, Start 16, Alt D+, ALt B+, Oil pres1, Oil pres2, Oil lvl...and at the Pins P 1, P2, P14...). I used blue painters tape and black indelible ink, then took pictures of wires labeled at their terminations...

Oops, sorry for this suggestion. Start at the Starter end as recommended. It feeds easier back to the top. Same thing after your done, feed through the top to down.

Cable harness remake under way. Now need to redo 14 pin, add crimp connectors, and new Bosch 2 pins - and re-install.

Nice work Neil. You did it the scary way and not one at a time. Are you going to cover the whole thing up once you get the ends sorted? If so, Silicone Tape is a perfect high temp and water tight seal.
