starter burnt when accelerating

Car stopped for some years (previous owner). Many checks during this weeks from transmision oil to brake bleeding, etc.

The car started nice. At the begining the sound was not very good, but with some time at idle it end up (after 30 minutes) sounding good. Always at idle.

Then, when pushing the throttle to climb from 1000 rpm to 2500 it did good but at the fourth time the car stoped and a cloud of smoke come up from the center of the engine. Getting under the car fast I could see smoke dissipating from the starter.

After some hours and everything cold, when you turn the key nothing happens. Maybe you can hear a low 'clack'.

Any idea of what could be wrong that has caused the starter to get fried just accelerating a car that's been operating ok for 30 minutes at idle?.

(porsche 928 -euro 1980 5speed)

Try removing the starter and check to see if the starter drive is out or in. If out it stayed engaged and burned up the starter motor and it will need to be replaced. It could have been sticky I the car had been sitting for awhile. Good luck.

I'm also thinking that could be the cause. That the starter has keeps engaged during the first 30 minutes with the engine running, not burning at idle but when we start pushing up the throttle the starter just fried.

I will remove the starter and see if what info I can get from it. Probably I will need to replace it but I hope I can find the reason why this one kept engaged before I installing a new one.

I'm thinking that if I install a new one, there should be a good way to check if it is working right or if it keeps engaged without compromising the new one. I accept any advice to check that. Thanks.

yeah, probably had a bad solenoid or it was stuck and the gear was stuck out on the flywheel gears. It will be very apparent once you remove it. The new starter, just put a jumper cable to the + and when you ground it, you should see the solenoid throw the gear forward and it will spin. Make sure to have your foot firmly on the gear as these things spin fast (with lotsa torque).
