Concealed Vin Number -

Hey Diverdan, Has anyone commented on a hidden VIN number location on the 928 ? Porsche normally has a couple of concealed locations to theoretically help discourage ID plate swaps. Once when a friend was looking at a late model (priced too good to be true) 911 I pulled the knee pad that runs along the lower edge of the dash to check the hidden VIN number stamped into a steel cross beam of the frame. It had been completely gouged out. The VIN number stamped on the firewall just above the transmission was also missing. Even though the windshield pillar plate and the VIN near the gas tank matched the title - there was obviously something amiss. The seller acted completely bewildered when we asked about the problem. Strangely enough the seller later said that the local police did not follow up with any investigation.

I've heard that California highway patrol is NOT so lax, and gets pretty serious fast if they find evidence of vin tampering.
