attaching spoiler to my 928..

I just bought a spoiler off an 82 928 from ebay. It is the soft one piece spoiler that extends up the back hatch, not the larger wing off an S 4. I popped off the interior trim panels, unscrewed the chrome exterior trim, and cut it back so the spoiler over laps the upper trim. I had to drill out two rivets and the spoiler lined up with all the existing screw holes. It is in place now, but i have 2 problems

1- the bottom of the spoiler has larger holes, no threads , so the screws which attach the vertical legs of the spoiler will not work to secure the horizontal part of the spoiler. any suggestions on how to attach the bottom portion.. As of now it is on, and tight , but the bottom is not very tight to the glass, and could collect debris and moisture.

2- as you can see in the picture, the wiper arms were re attached but the plastic/rubber cuffs that cover the nuts are a little to snug to the spoiler. i can get them to fit down and cover the nuts, but if i turn the wipers on they will certainly rub and perhaps scuff up the spoilers soft rubber

I am going to take the spoiler back off on saturday, I can take pictures of the bottom holes that will not accepts the screws if anyone needs to see, I have a few possible ideas on how to secure it, I just dont want to totally hack it on.. One idea was to tack weld metal strips across the under side, and get selft tapping screws that will bite into the metal and suck the spoiler down. any others ideas would help

I removed my spoiler because it was not original to the car and saw how it was attached (poorly) to the car.

These are the tabs you are talking about - the ones with the larger holes.

On my car, the PO put in these long bolts and filled in the top with silicon to hold them in place. It's worth seeing how someone did this, but I don't recommend it as they turn and are almost impossible to get out if you ever want to remove the spoiler. It took me hours to remove them as I could not easily get the nuts off.

When you put the spoiler on, make sure you use some sealer around the bolts. My back window leaked every time it rained - I've since sealed up all the holes and it is now dry.

There are different caps for the rear wiper depending whether you have a spoiler or not. On mine, the upper cap fit with and without the spoiler - I think you can just push it down and it will work correctly. The bottom cap was missing on mine and I ordered a new one, but it did not fit properly. I'm using it now without the spoiler, but it still is not a good fit.

Good luck with yours.

oh, the bolts come down through the spoiler and get a nut from the inside of the car? I thought they would screw through the hatch into something... I had one other idea, and that was to take a piece of azek trim, which is white PVC. I was going to cut block to fit into the holes where the silicone was holding the screws. I could then screw from inside the hatch, into the pvc and that would suck the spoiler down. the pvc most likely will not split when screwed into. I will pop mine off post pics this weekend

Armor-All is the best thing for that spoiler! Use it at least every other wash and it will look like new when it is 50 years old.

N!

Just from looking at your picture, it looks like the spoiler is not down towards the rear as the holes by the wiper seems to have a space on the upper area. Maybe moving it down will allow clearance for the wiper shaft.

There should be two speed nuts on those metal tabs ( #92851230702) and two bolts which go up through the rear hatch to attach it. If you go to the DC automotive website (or any that has a good parts diagram) you will be able to see exactly how the rear spoiler attaches to the hatch.
Hope this helps.
