"LEOS928" get prepped for Painting. Finally!!

Ok fellas and gals, I finally got the better halfs approval to get my 928 painted. Already chose the color (Gunsmoke Mettalic) from the Kustomshop line of their new line "Hot Rod Flatz."

Hot Rod Flatz

I am taking every spare minute I can this weekend to start pulling parts off. I already spoke to the Painter Shop about the project and felt very confident on his work.

I got motivated in doing a flat color since I saw the Lamborghini Reventon done in the same flat color I am painting mine.

And yes! PICS will follow

Good luck. I hope it works out the way you hope. The few flat 928's I've seen don't look that great. I think Satin would look pretty good but I guess we wont know until someone tries it. BTW, I thought your car was already flat black?

Thanks for the kind words guys! I just finished getting both bumpers, and both front fenders off. The hard part is done. Just gotta pull trim and the S4 Wing and should be dropping the 928 next week sometime. Will upload some pics in the morning, I am beat. Damn all those 8mm nuts.

Dano dont forget if there is/are any cracks in the painted surface of the PU covers then they should be stripped down to the surface with a media blaster with walnut shells.
If the painter tries to feather out scratches or cracks they will come back in a few weeks especially with the dark color.
I have seen this happen more times than you can imagine.
I know it sounds like a lot more work but its better than repainting again after you see the cracks emerging.

Also that zinc chromating should be applied to all of the aluminum metal on the car prior to the epoxy coat if your going to bare metal.
(We sprayed my car complete with the zinc for and even coat)
The aluminum has to be prepared differently or the top coats wont stick.
When i repainted my 79 we stripped it,
alodined it,
zinc chromated it ,
2 coats of epoxy with a dry block sand then,
2 more coats with a wet sand then ,
a Glassurit base/clearcoat.,
Both PU covers were blasted with shells ,
and 2 coats of the epoxy sealer with flex agent then,
flex added to the paint/clear for the PU covers
Its a whole lotta work but the better the prep the longer the top coat will last, good luck

Put on another coat -

Man - No wonder a factory quality Porsche repaint is so expensive when done correctly. Painting seemed much simpler before all the modern exotic panel materials were being used. I remember one of my earliest efforts as a teenager to help repaint a friend’s car - the logic for long term quality was pretty simple. If there were any sanding scuffs and you had paint left over, you just put on another coat.

Are you jambing the car? Painting the jambs, inside of hood, hatch?

I'm looking forward to seeing pics. I started Garrett's in May and I'm just now ready to paint something.

The more close-ups you can shoot of the body seam / connection areas, and post them up, the better. It helps to see how it goes together when planning similar projects. Thanks, Good Luck with the painting (both of you)

now is a good time to scrub all of the under panel parts this will remove as much dust and dirt that can be blown into the new paint

Wow, I'm really looking forward to finally seeing your car finished. Although it did look sinister in the flat, flat primer black..

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".

I think there is alwasy something that needs to be done on our cars. I guess the answer to your question is no. I still have to drop the transaxle and fix a seal. I got lot's of plans but little money.

The Jambs and other interior areas have already been painted Black using the rattle can. I scuffed, primer, then used Duplicolor paint. I know it's not the best way but it's good enough for me.

Absolutely, I just ran out of free time as Sunday was my 3 year olds day at Legoland. I will also take your earlier suggestions to the Painter. I really appreciate it.
