Wheel bearings usually start to growl when going bad. They will also change tone when weight is shifted side to side. CV joint usually get loose and "clunk". If the boot is torn all the grease has probably all flown out so it may make a noise. If they aren't bad they will be soon.. address the boot and check for play asap

As Pete says, check play on the CV's. Safely, jack up the rear with the rear wheels off the ground and in Neutral. Make sure you put some Jack Stands under there and/or some old rims. Safety First! With the wheel free, you can grab the rear axle and see if there is any play, if not, move to the wheel and see if there is play there, if so, wheel bearing.
It seems as if most PO's never change the CV Boots and they crack, but with the centrifugal force, the grease is more than likely right up against the CV Joint and ok. The problem with torn boots, they introduce dirt/sand which will eventually break down the bearings. I think on my next CV job, I will just buy a pre-packed rebuilt one as it some serious dirty work.
