Headlamps won't turn off

'82 Euro 928

Got some issues now that the idiot at Adv Auto put my battery in backwards.

Fried the alternator (literally smoked the diodes)
and my head lamps seem to light when the key is off as long as the battery is connected.
regardless of headlight switch position.

I disconnected the alternator -- and limped home. I'll pull the alternator tmrw,

I was able to get them to pop up and rescind -- but they would not turn off.

Any debug suggestions?

Not sure if there was any other collateral damage.

She seems to be running fine.

Mike

When mine did that it was a bad relay. If your relying on places like Advanced autoparts for your 928 maintenance you will probably be in for a lot more experience like this, not to be a dick but I'm just sayin'

OUCH!

Group 49 battery has some juice, good news is I think that with key off many things were disconnected. The alternator, starter, jump post, and CE panel all have direct unfused connections to the battery, but I "think" most of the CE panel is fused.

Start checking fuses and relays, might as well make it a whole normal PM of the electrical system. I would not be surprised to see other things failing soon from the damage, but I don't know of my who have connected a battery backwards, its not easy to do.

Wow, I usually just buy a battery and install myself. I didn't know Autozone would even put themselves in such a position. The 928 is an electrical nightmare already, throw reverse polarity in there and you've just downright crossed into the Twilight Zone.

I was already in Twilight Limbo -- this either put me over the edge -- or maybe
it burnt out any gremlins hiding in the zone :-)
