Sunroof problem part II
Heey, so i got my sunroof (kinda) repaired (it closes tight so that it doesn't leak now). And i got the leather liner back on it. But it doesn't open/close good. opening is usually pretty good but when i try to close it, it goes very slow and then stops about half closed and i have to pull it closed the rest of the way. i want to have it fixed by spring, or summer at the latest. the guy i had work on it said the motor was old and i shouldn't use it until i can get it fixed. Any ideas? or do i need to just replace the motor? Thanks :D
|
It could be the motor. It could be the transmission for the motor. Or it could just be the cables laying in that 20+ year old hardened grease that need to be cleaned.
You really haven't told us what you have already done, so it will be really hard to help you beyond that, but my bets are on the third scenario. |
Been there, done that, read this half way down the thread.

Well im not really sure whats been done. i just paid a guy to get it closed tight. So all i know is what ive said. Thanks MPDano, ill check that out.

Ha, yeah i was kinda in a hurry cuz y'know, i live in oregon ;).. checked that out, got me inspired, almost cried when i saw the video, now im just prayin for some good weather (pfft sure).. or gotta get the golf carts outta the garage and clean that out.. But i just put my liner back on last week, and now i gotta take it off! its all my friends fault for wanting to be picked up from school in a porsche.. high schoolers.. glad ill be in college next year..
|
Althought its been 20-30 degrees the last few days, so i dont have to worry bout rain.. but it could start snowing :D which can be kinda a downer when you have your sunroofless porsche in it..

My roof does the same, if flys open and crawls back. my suspicion was the grease also. on my list of things to do with the ole rat.
|
Well, i guess ill just have to get to work on that..

I agree - MPDano's posts ARE very good
There's another guy out there (not sure if he's on this list or not) that has a site called Dwayne's Garage (anything like Chuck's Garage?) that has fantastic write-ups with good pictorials as well. He hasn't done EVERYTHING - but the repairs that he has done are VERY well done (at least, the several that I have referred to) |
Nice, nice. Ill have to check that out

Im wondering what 'grease' is best. Im thinking of going with a dry-slide or some form of graphite lube if I go in again (its slowing down again :( ) |
It's slowing down due to the old grease still being there plus cold weather will also do this in combination. I also noticed this if I were to try and open my Sunroof in the morning versus the afternoon. The only way to rid the slowness is to completely dismantle the track (including the small pipe with gear belt) and get all the grease out, then probably use some Silicone Spray or Graphite as you suggested.
I'm perfectly content with mine the way it is. Too cold anyways to enjoy an open Sunroof. |
I had my sunroof open again today, and this time it opened fine but i had to pull it closed the whole way ha. So i need to hurry up and get it fixed! :)
