3K for an 83 S

I thought I would throw this one out there. It's too far from me to check out, but it's an OB OBO car and the Color looks cool.

Yeah, and he/she is asking for Best Offer too. I think that exterior color with a Tan interior is amazing. Not saying that this has a Tan interior, just if it did.

Wow, if that is factory paint, and looks as good in person, could be a nice deal.

Looks almost too good to be true. If it was local I'd be picking it up tonight.

Murrieta. It's just past Temecula coming from San Diego. I believe Murrieta is part of Riverside County.

Good luck kueho. Hopefully you'll take pics of both the interior and engine for us.

Bought!!! - paid $2500

Its not bad! Got a few issues - but mostly cosmetic.
The battery was dead from sitting, but we were able to safely jump it. Not a single drop of any fluid under the car, and given that the battery was dead, and it was sitting in the garage, I think its safe to bet it had probably been sitting there for a bit.

Very clean underneath. Definitiely a CA or Arizona car. Currently registered through May of 2012 in AZ (which was probably part of the issue in selling it, because it MAY not pass CA smog - but I'm going to Hawaii ANYWAYS, so thats not an issue) PO is military (Marine Corps) and seemed fairly knowledgable. The car also came with a full set of factory bindered hard manuals.

Issues:
Rear hatch doesn't seal tight, so get an exhaust leak into the car if the windows are open
Speedometer is intermittent (hit a bump and it kicks in or out...)
Odometer quit at 77K. PO's best guess is between 80 and 90 K (he seems honest, but who knows)
Heater controls aren't working - blows hot air continuously
Interior door locks are missing, and passenger door lock does not work from external
passenger window button needs to be replaced/rebuilt
My brother would call her a 30 footer - looks GREAT from 30 feet, but up close you can see where some clear coat is coming up, paint is sun-faded/oxidized, and a few small scratches
one LITTLE ding on fenderwell behind driver door
LOVE that gunmetal grey...
Blue interior
Interior is age-appropriate for 30 years. Will need a new dash cover, some vinyl dye. Seats need to be re-covered. Carpeting looks good. Headliner is good. All the glass is good. VERY dark tint on the windows...
At least 15K since last timing belt/water pump, and PO has had it 4 years - that will be an early priority item.
Mechanically really seems to be EXCELLENT. Fluids all look good, engine is clean, wiring all looks good in engine bay. No noises, whines, ticks...
A JOY to drive. The rumble is AMAZING
Steering is heavy - but I haven't driven one before - is that normal, or is my power steering non-existent/broken?
Might be running a little rich - will need to get into a bit to see where the timing is and to pull the plugs and check them for carbon
relatively new tires, clean rims

I will get photos tonight!!!

Yesssssssssssss! All that stuff mentioned is easily fixed. Make sure to take a pic of the Door Jamb where the EPA and VIN are. Congrats!!

Oh BTW, drive the car at 140 mph and see if you want easy steering. Heavy is normal and is what you want.

Oh, what did you eventually pay for it? Did you use the "or best offer" card?

Well, we had the military thing working (i'm a Navy reservist, attached to the Marine corps - medical!), and so I did use the OBO card, and paid $2500. I figured that wasn't beating him too bad, nobody puts OBO without expecting to take less, and I think it is probably worth a bit more than I actually paid - so I was very comfortable with that price. Could I have got it for less? MAYBE - but this was the first day listed, and I don't like to dick around with what seems to be a good deal - spend the money and enjoy the fruits - or take your chances on someone else scooping it out from under you!!!

OK - found one more issue - I have a brake pad in the right rear that appears to be done for and is just into the rotor. So brakes need to be done and I want to get parts ordered ASAP.

Here's my question - do the rotors have ANY meat in them that makes them amenable to being resurfaced or should I just suck it up and order the new rotor now, along with the pads? The gouge is about 1 cm in width, right in the MIDDLE of the rotor surface. Not deep, but not shallow either - the rotor definitely needs to be resurfaced or replaced - and I can't see the back side yet....

Doncha just love a new (used) car???? I'm finding all sorts of little tiny 25 year old problems....

Ok - so after the brakes, the next BIG issue is a bad squeaking noise from the front end - and I think the shocks are likely the originals and almost certainly blown. The squeaking happens with up and down motion of the front end, and if i take a speed bump (slowly, no less), it does NOT dampen well, but will oscillate through two or three revolutions.

Sooooo, any recommendations on shocks? Do I need to address anything else to make the squeaking go away? I'm not really interested in spending huge gobs of money (it IS just an 83 4.7 liter automatic US car) but I would like to have a comfortable, safe, enjoyable daily driver.

Should I be planning on replacing springs as well? Rear end was done last rear according to the PO - and it does feel (and sound) tight.

(hee hee - sorta answering my opwn question aren't i??? Boge shock - 99% of OEM shocks - least expensive...)

Welcome to the 25 yr old plus club
Figure about $2500 to fix a $2500 car to a useable condition! You also need to check fuel lines, etc, etc, etc.
Where are you and would you like another opinion on the car - many here in San Diego can look it over for you - yes, your front shocks ( actually struts) are shot, springs are probably ok, - call 928 intl again!
