Driving lesson

Today was my daughters first driving lesson. we took the 928 to an abandon industrial area and put her in the driver's seat, and I have to say she did pretty well, and we made a great memory.

Sounds like a good thing to do. Driving the car is one thing, defensive driving is another. Maybe get her some professional instruction and safety classes too.

Sounds fun. The problem with learning on a 928 is the nose. It's actually much longer than it appears from the driver seat. It will be especially tough for a girl (I'm assuming she's shorter than the average man) and a beginner. If she has problems with it put up the lights. It gives a better idea of how big the car is.

I let my 16 year old granddaughter drive mine for 20 miles or so....she is a recent graduate of drivers training and an "A" student in a quasi-military academy, not that all that really matters. But, she was clearly afraid of the car, drove it very cautiously, she did get over 65 once on the interstate, but the grin on her face was there for hours....and I suspect it will be a great memory for her too...it is for me...

So true what these cars do for you. They also need respect for their power, but also need to be opened up once in awhile. It's what they are built for.

Sounds like you have a well disciplined young girl and I'm sure she'll be fine.

Check out, Home | Driver's Edge its a free "sponsored" half day performance driving class for teens, and its VERY good.

Day starts with a bit of rah rah about the program and some general information and filling out of consent forms etc. Then I think it has four or five parts and everybody is split into rotating groups;

1) Walk around and under hood explanation of all the stuff on a car the driver needs to be aware of, tires, mirrors, checking oil, etc. etc.
2) Highway patrol guys do a drunk driving demo with disorienting goggles, brief talk, then as long as it takes Q&A on driving and insurance laws etc. (worth sitting in on).
3) First driving exercise, braking, abs, wet surface.
4) Second driving exercise, something else.
5) plug the sponsors, goodie bag, more rah rah drive safe.

Driving school is in the works, she is a great kid and has always been very careful, so I don't mind teaching her in the 928, my son however, also a great kid, not a chance, 40 hp in his future

Yeah, the granddaughter can drive it any time I am along....the grandsons? I won't even let them ride in it....besides that, it doesn't have a 5000 watt sound system, so I doubt if they would get in it anyhow...

They would really hate mine. I took out the aftermarket JVC CD player and built a cover that slides under the clock console. I used plastic from one of those cheap plastic 928 dash cover kits. So it looks good. The engine is the only music I need. It's a strange thing for a musician to do isn't it?

I let my son drive my '81 to school when I bought my '86. The other parents thought I was spoiling him. They also thought the 928 ($5,000) was more expensive than the new Mustang GT5.0s ($20,000) their sons were wrapping around trees. I thought he got scared before he outdrove the car's capabilities and the car saved his tail, but that's just MY opinion.
