Ignition Question
Sorry but my last post was mis-understood. I need to figure out how to replace an ignition switch for a 1982 928. Not the part where the key goes in just the electronic part. Do I need to pull the center console? I went under the dash and I can unplug it but I can't get to the two screws that hold it on.

Remove the Pod. It's also easier if you remove the Steering Wheel and Signal Stalk too. Just follow the ignition tumbler to the rear and there ya have it. There is a plug on the backside of the Ignition Switch.

I understood the last post about this perfectly. MPDano is right on. I don't pull the steering wheel, but it's easier to work if you do. You have to remove the instrument cluster pod (the binnacle as it's called) or at least move it up and off of the steering console. It unbolts with allens bolts and comes up and off of the steering console. Then you can just reach in and unscrew the switch and replace it. It's not hard.
Don't put a key in the igntion! There is a rubber ring around the ignition switch. Pry it out with a small screw driver. There are two under trays under the steering wheel that must be removed with philips screws. Then the two allens are pulled out at the very right and very left under the pod. You might have to look for them. The tricky part is manhandling the pod over the ignition switch part of the binnacle. The blinkers get in the way. (MPDano removes or possibly slides the signal stalk to make this easier) Once it's off you can just reach in and unscrew the ignition switch backward with a short flat screw driver. The fun part is putting it all back together. You must line up your speedometer cluster bolt holes complete with the rubber/aluminum couplings on each side with the two removed binnacle pod allen bolts. It's really not hard, but it has to be done right. One bolt on each side up through two couplings per side. One coupling large side up, and one coupling under that large side down on each side. Theres a place on each side of the instrument cluster for the couplings to slide on. The allen bolts go back up through the couplings and connect to the underside of the pod. This keeps your speedo cluster in place. Viola. If I left anything out or if I'm confusing, please correct me or ask what on earth I'm talking about. NOTE: If you don't check to make sure your instrument cluster is all plugged in on the back, half of your guages may not work. So do this before you put the pod back on. Unless you want to become a real expert and take it apart all over again.

On my Euro those bolts that hold the Pod and Cluster on were 10mm, but on my S they were Allen as 928CarerraGTP states.

I wish all of them were bolts. It's kinda of a PITA to find the allens while standing on your head under the dash.

Dano, Yes. One of my least favorite places to work is under a dash. Behind the wheel is my favorite though.

if you do remove the steering wheel,
and you should, You should inspect the upper steering shaft bearing, and the turn signal switch position and horn contact. When refitting the steering wheel leave the lower column cover off and set the TS switch to the correct height so the horn tab wont wear off. the steering wheel only has to lightly contact the ring as a small dab of grease to the tab. Note you can buy a new tab and rivet it on to the old switch

Mine are okay because I don't take any of that apart from the factory settings. However, I agree these things should be checked once in a while if you are getting scraping or play in the wheel.
