$1600 Tranny Re-seal ??

What do you guys think? The guy will drop my Tranny and Re-seal for $1600. This does not include that I will be replacing the Torque Tube and Torque Converter Bearings myself.

I though you "had" to remove the TT and the Tranny as a Unit? He was charging me more labor since he said wouldn't have to remove the TT and just the Tranny to do the reseal. Since he will be replacing the TT with my Rebuilt one, he will have to charge more to remove the TT.

Anyways, I just wanted to hear what you guys have to say about his estimate and justification. I went to him since he fixed Al's (Evozine) 84 928 which didn't have a 4th gear in his Auto.

Your thoughts please

well just ask your self is it easier for you to write a check and drop the keys in his hand .

Or pick up your tool box and work on your back for a few days and have ATF fluid spilled everywhere

What does a re-seal entail? To me it sounds expensive unless there's a lot of internal work involved in that. Sounds like you could do it. Remember, you could almost get a whole car for that, okay, a pos, but still

Leo could get two cars for that.

You have a spare tranny sitting there, clean it up and see how a reseal goes.

Lots of nice write up and picts on RL due to Bill Ball sending his out and having it come back with issues.

I was starting to look into what I will need to drop my Tranny/TT. Mike, that's a good idea. I'll look at the Euro Tranny and see how hard the Seals are to do. Merlin, are those seals and o-rings easy to get to? The Tranny guy said that so much had to come out that I might as well rebuild it.

Hey Leo,
First off; I feel your pain. When I had mine at the painters for 5-6 months sitting I developed a tranny leak; both the pump & front seal went.
$1,600.00 is alot IMO. For the tranny remove and install I was charged $735.00 (I'm staring at the itemized bill in front of me). Since the tranny was dropped he also changed out both rear CV boots and tidied up the exhaust with new hangers, gaskets and vac lines to/from the tranny. He also serviced the tranny; taking it apart, checking everything, etc., etc., New Dexron fluid also. My total bill was $1,002.28 inc tax. Mind you, this is by one the best Porsche mechanics in the Midwest (Bob Popovic - The Shop); people sell cars with his name attached to it as the mechanic.
I was debating whether to buy a lift and do all of this myself but a decent lift would run me over a couple of grand at least (I plan on buying a lift when we break construction on our new garage; hopefully soon.....) and then if I ran into anything I couldn't finish I would have to transport said car and numerous unattached parts to the mechanic, which would suck at the least.......and lets face it; tranny work is awful! Greasy, dirty, on your back for long periods of time, etc.
The upside, which is HUGE: I also have a warranty from the mechanic regarding the work preformed and the parts used.

-Gary

Ok, I am looking at the WSM for the early 3 Speed Tranny. My Euro that has a 3 Speed in it, is leaking from the same area. In the front Torque Converter area. I only see a pump on the "rear" converter area. A little confused on why I am seeing this and where is this front pump?

the least expensive way to fix it is to
replace the TC bearings,
swap out the TC radial seal
swap out the front pump O ring,
and wipe off the front pump gasket, (dont screw with it, the front pump gasket that is)
Replace the pan gasket and filter,
swap out the Bowden cable housing O ring,
all said about 100.00 for parts plus 45.00 for fluids,
put vaseline on the front pump bronze bushing before installing the TC

Found more and the magic numbers. Contrary to some other posts and locations. Mine was near the Reservoir versus the Diff Drain Plug. Looks like the Pan is also shot as you can see by the PO RTV fix.

Look at the last word under my Username to the left. If Bill has his own website, that would be helpful.

The bearings are self explanatory, but I can't locate the "front" pump in the WSM. I would think the 3-4 speeds both have this pump. My WSM covers only the 3 Speed. A pic maybe? I was looking at buying a Tranny Rebuild Kit with all the Seals, Gaskets, etc. I mean, if I have it out anyways, shouldn't I seal it like a Frogs A@# ?

Leo, I have two versions of the Mercedes 722.3-4 transmission manuals if you just let me know where to email them to (PM is fine). Michael

Talked to Bill, may take him a little time since he is working on a smog fail sold GT.

Bills Workshop.
Bill's 89 928 S4

Front pump , can't paste it right now, just past the torque converter.

Got the Manuals from Michael, I see now that the Front Pump is right behind the Torque Converter as you remove it. I'm going to clean off the Tranny today and start dismantling those parts as well as the TT, so I can match up the bearings at Kaman Bearings in San Diego. I'll just buy enough for both TT and TC's.

Do we have part numbers on those Seals and O-Rings?

Ok, decided to do this on my own. Heck for $1600, I can get lot's of tools. This is how I get new tools as long as I can justify doing this for less $$.

Here are more pics of it before I cleaned it up. As you know this was Mikes (DanglerB's) then I Al bought it and then I have it now. Shift Valve was out but not sure if it's from this Tranny since I haven't opened the pan yet. It has some gouges and not sure if this will hinder it's performance. The Flyweight Governor was out as well, not sure what this does but I put it back and put the plate back on with clip before I sprayed the Tranny with Engine Cleaner. The Control Pressure Cable is not there since there is a big open hole so I made sure to cover that with some plastic before the wash down as well.

Anyways, what do you think? Is this Tranny worthy?
