Crikey - almost worth it for the plates alone...

Hmmm - it's at the other end of the country. It's on the NZ equivalent of eBay. Don't know if I need a parts doner that bad, but the plates are probably worth $1K on their own:

NZ 928 - $1 reserve

Plates are neat! I guess they stay with the car in NZ. I bet it's fun driving down your way!!! I would love to see NZ some day.

Well, fun is one way of putting it - not going out at night and avoiding low profile cars is the best idea!

UK used to have a big trade buying and selling plates with a funny combo.

I've read about a company that packages a tour of NZ, you get a Harley and a bedroll for a week or two, sounded great.

For the unitiated, "some" is approaching 10,000 in under 18 months.

Canterbury Quake Live

Never thought I'd experience a 7, let alone three 6's as well. One saving grace is that I haven't suffered any loss of family. A work colleague was crushed by falling masonry in town last year, and another woman I know is now paralysed and wheelchair bound after suffering the same fate.

Hasn't been a good year, and when I can get the Hun out, she scrapes her spoiler as I navigate down our potholed and blistered driveway. And water restrictions (Only allowed to use the hose 3 days a week due to broken water infrastructure) mean I can only wash her on a Sunday.

But it could be worse - at least we can flush!

Yeah - anything next to a river got hit hard - that went down to one lane on the other side for a while, now it's both ways but the riverside lanes are still being rebuilt. You'd get lost within the four aves - almost all points of reference have gone. And pretty much anything over three stories has or is coming down.

my father was bought up in St Albans (Geraldine street) How did that area handle the shake?, Older wooden houses usually flex more than new brick ones.

Hmm - not as bad as it could be TC3 or blue/green as we know it. That's the same as my house has been rated. As an older wooden place it probably has bung piles and an unflat floor now. Given the number of streams and river tributaries in the Edgeware area, I suspect the land is probably quite bad - but not Red bad (ie the government will pay you the latest rateable value of the land and you must move out as the suburb is demolished and turned into a park.)

I took the wife out for dinner in town after the 7.1 in September 2010, and the cab driver took us back up one of the streets parallel to Geraldine - hitting every manhole along the way as they stuck up 1-2 inches above the road level. After February I saw some that were almost a foot out of the ground. Rumour is that the concrete didn't rise up, just all the land around them sank (Some GPS data backs this up) and the Port Hills are xx feet shorter than they were a year ago.

From what I have seen and read, the plates under the Southern Alps are on the move, might take a few years but will no doubt happen again.
I personally think that with the timing, movement probably also responsible for the Greymouth mine disaster.
Whole country has the shakes, Time to pack and move to Oz.

We'd love to - we were pretty stoic after the first two, but the last two 6+ ones have broken us down to the point where we want out. Of course, we have to sell the house first, and nothing is selling in the current broken state with land flagged as "potentially an issue". Insurance is taking a long time to sort out (Assessor guidlines include things like "Check for new damage, cracks with no dirt or plant growth" - yeah, 18 months after the event, you are gonna get a bit of that...) - and nothing can be done until the Govt. can say what remedial action needs to be taken to fix things. Two of my brothers were in areas that the Govt deemed "Red" which mean the they were paid out the value of their land and buildings and they headed inland. My parents managed to sell their "Yellow" house in a broken state by handing over the insurance settlement as well - and have moved inland too. At their age they won't live to see the city rebuilt, and the other guys are just starting their families, so are lucky to have a clean slate.

Anyway - this is far from the topic we need to be discussing!

I'm just happy if I can squeeze her out once or twice a week and find some flat road to blat down.

Ended up going for NZ$3050 to someone local. That's around US$2500. Ouch - looks like these cars still carry a good premium over here.

Most Def a Show Car. I'd feel funny driving that around town. I think the ingenuity is awesome. Still not sure what the Solar Panel is for though.

Rob Edwards got a picture done blending hood open and hood closed on his car so the motor is fully visible. That got me to thinking of having a full size picture of the engine done on a wrap for the hood.
