clutch info
Got a non-urgent question.
I as I peruse the web soaking info., I am thinking about my clutch. The pedal is on the floor. I am in the early process of trying to build a house, my 928 is sitting in the grass, so I wont be going under it for a while, but I am trying to plan ahead. I already ordered a new slave, as I found it on clearance cheaper than a rebuild kit. My question is....the master...how often are they the problem. I am aware of the "blue hose", and as I said, I won't be messing with it for a while, just wondering, and hoping someone who is a clutch genius would want to share some knowledge. Thanks! 78 928 5sp |

Keep the following link handy as it has all the info you are going to need to order parts and change out the master and slave cylinder, bleeding as well as other helpful info. Within my post there are other great links so look for those:
'79 - clutch master cylinder hose leak If it goes to the floor, it could be that there is no fluid in the system or could be a more serious problem with the clutch itself (if there is no opposing force from the clutch pushing back on the slave). I think the best thing to do if you are looking for getting things back in order on the cheap would be to get under the car and look through the access hole located on the clutch housing by the slave cylinder. Have someone work the clutch while you observe if the shaft moves or not. If it is not moving or only a little bit, then most likely it has air or fluid leaked out. Also, it is not too hard to pull off the clutch access cover from the bottom if you want to see a little more. I believe I had to take off the slave and the starter and then you can pull the cover down. If you feel like it is just a leak or air, I would fill the system, bleed it and try to diagnose where the leak is. There is a hydraulic hose between the master and slave that you can't see real well as well as the blue hose that goes from the reservoir to the master. Typical places to also look are inside the car where the clutch pushes on the master. Carpet gets wet back there. Also the front of the slave can be leaking. Although, you may not be able to bleed the clutch system real well if you have a brake leak somewhere that is draining the master cylinder reservoir. Anyway, just a couple of ideas to get you started.

thanks!
Good read. There is no fluid in the system, I guess I could have mentioned that. My wife and I have rented our home, and are working with a builder / bank on getting some construction started.... I have no good access to underneath at the moment, but as we play musical homes, I might end up with a some work area.... Wifey has approved me a BIG barn style workshop with the new house, 31'x44'...big to me, as I have never had a workshop before....so perhaps by this time next year I'll have a great shop, might even be able to score a hydraulic lift, as I have a buddy that owns a garage, and ovebought lifts by 2 due to some abandoned expansion plans...he is leaning towards letting me have one for $500! |
