928 ball joint

Hi i got a 78 with aluminum ball joints, do i need more than just the ball joint when changing from alu to steel?

( I'm thinking of the Ball Joint Eccentrics and Mounting Brackets, will the old one from the alu type fit on the steel type ball joint)

I have acsess to 2 Lover a arms complete with steel ball joints from a s4. Will these fit on my 78 reusing the Original spindle?

Pretty sure that is a no, length is slightly different as I recall. Any of the normal 928 vendors will have exactly what you need.

Thank you for the reply, i will not bye the s4 parts..
But do i need the eccentric and clip, or do i reuse the old one? It cost more than an arm for the Eccentrics and clip. And when u change from alu type ball joint the old eccentrics and clip do not longer fitt and u need the new one ??? If so this is what it cost just for the parts and shipping...

Eccentric{6} 2 $314.14

Ball Joint, Lower{5} 2 $235.37

Clip{(4)} 2 $184.78

* Subtotal $734.29
Shipping. 100
* TOTAL $834.29
*

Oh wow. I would contact 928 Intl and see what they think you need to replace out those Aluminum Ball Joints. They sell used stuff and are very honest.

You forgot new nuts. Call 928 Int'l. or go their website. They have used eccentrics and clips which will cut your cost a lot. But you should definitely do the upgrade for safety.

928 int have thankfully used eccentrics at $ 25 piece, it's a little less than 150 per piece new. have also found out that I do not have to change the brackets, just use washers.

You don't have to buy all those parts, but its up to you.

You need two of the eccentrics. You can re-use two.

The new bracket has shorter studs because the steel ball joint carrier is thinner. So if you re-use the old one, you'll have a little more of the stud showing after the nut is tightened.

I re-used my bracket, and the eccentrics. Have a can of PBlaster on hand. That and a breaker bar were necessary to get mine done. I used a ball joint puller from Harbor Freight on one side, but it broke trying to get the other one off. A pickle fork finally got it off after a struggle.

ALSO, very important. You'll need to "compress" the arm so that the top nut doesn't spin as you try and get the bottom nut off. You'll see what I mean. I gently jacked it up from the bottom, and wedged a piece of wood in the wheel well.
