Looking at a 1983 928s
Hi. I have an '87 911 Targa. But I want to get a 928 for some fun on the track. I admit to knowing nothing about the 928. I am starting to look and have found a nice 83 928s.
My question is what are the common issues to look for. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Welcome to the 928 World. Take a moment and look over the "Common Fixes" Thread and it pretty much will get you past most issues. The big thing about 928's is that most have a lot of deferred maintenance, but not much stumps us, so your in good hands. What is the asking price for your 83 S?

83
Look out for early 83 balljoints- they are aluminum unless they have been replaced and prone to failure. Not a big lift to do the upgrade, just move it to the front of the to-do list along with freshening fuel lines, tune up, etc.

Imagine a front engined 911 with a 90 degree V8 that the engine and transmission are a real ***** to get out of and you pretty much have the idea. Electronics are simular. Relays and fuses run most everything and therefore can cause trouble. Grounds often cause trouble. Interior lights, seat memory, and other things cause shorts and battery drains but they can usually be fixed.
Timing belts are not so much of a worry on 928s earlier than 1985, unless they're Euro ROW cars, cars with larger cam profiles, or cars with excessive carbon build up. '83 and '84 are my favorite years as you can see by my signature. On automatic 4 speeds, there can be leaks, slips, and pressure control problems. On stick shifts the early (before '86) gear boxes have synchronizer, clutch, and linkage problems. I prefer automatics due to parts availability. The majority of 928s were automatics so there are more parts for them sitting around.
