Problem instrument cluster 928 S '81

Hi guys,

I'm from Belgium and i have a problem with my 1981 928 S.

My speedometer works but my odometer doesn't, i've put already an other speedometer, it stayed the same i've also put in another backprint (or how you call it) and it stays the same.
Can anyone help me ?

Greetings

Very common issue with all old 928's I believe. Mine has never worked and someday I will fix.

Here is a link to read ---->> Link

PS: Greetings and Welcome. :-)

More than likely the Odometer Gear. It disintegrates after time. Terrible material used. Here is a link to buy one, but there is also a write up on how to get in there and replace it. If this is the case, when you replaced your Speedometer in the past, you should have seen small broken bits of plastic.

First, thx guys for thinking with me to solve this problem,

Dano, thx for the advice, but i allready checked the odometer gear from both speedometers and they are ok. But now, yesterday i've looked again at the car and kept changing the printplates and speedometers from each other and suddenly the speedometer didn't work anymore at all. Then i examened the wire connections in the trunk, didn't see nothing really wrong with, but wiggled it a bit, tryed again and HOORAY everything worked. Put the dash and everything back together again, and.... it stopped working again grrrr . I'm getting grey hair from this car :D .
Ok, so i've got a spooky car....
I'm going to check the wiring again.
To be continued....

Thx guys for thinking with me to solve this problem

Yes, there is this wire bundle, plus there is a sensor mounted on the rear of the Diff. Remove and Clean with a wire brush. This part get's a lot corrosion.

Hi guys,

I think the problem is solved..... the connectors in the back ( in front of the spare tire) were not correctly given contact inside of the plastic where they come together. It all works for now, let's hope it stays that way.
Thanks again to you all for your responses.

Hi guys,

I think the problem is solved.
In the back ( in front of the spare wheel ) inside the plastic connectors the pins were giving bad contact. Pushed them a little further in there places and everything works :D . Hope it stays that way.
Thanks to you all for your time and responses.

By the way, does anybody know how to level the headlights, so they are equal in the front fenders ? The left one is not properly in position (to high) when laying down.

nuts4porsche 04-11-2012 11:58 AM

you should be able to hand turn them up and down-adjust them drivers side knob under hood between headlights dano has a pic of it im sure!

That just manually brings them up or down. His is just not aligned correctly. I've never had to adjust mine, but i am sure if you look at the assembly, you can figure it out. I do believe off hand that there are some nuts that hold the light assembly on the pole. These you should be able to see right as you open the hood. On the left and right sides of the pole.

Dirk
What are the colors of the wires at the connector you worked on near the spare tire?

Odometer

Ok guys,

I'm back again, the odometer worked about 8 kilometers (5 miles) and went dead again.....And now it's totally finished, the speedometer keeps going, but the odometer doesn't. I don't know how the odometer get's his impuls. Is it from the sensor in the differential (but if that one's gone why does the speedometer work ?), or does he get it from the automatic gear box ? There's two wire's going to the sensor of the diff. and four to the automatic gear box. There's also one (white/brown) going to a kind of magnetic contact to the side of the gear box.
It's very strange that the odometer work for a couple of miles after you work on the car, he also worked a while after working on the dash... (two or three times).
But now it seems totally finished.
@ Wallstreet , i will look again tomorrow what coulors thy have and if i find the time going to start taking pictures of everything and post them so you guys can see what we are talking about.
@ Nuts4porsche, this knob is just for leveling the beam and this is not what i meant, its the whole unit that is higher on the one side.
@Mpdano, I know what you mean and i've tried it, it doesn't help, looks like i'm gonna have to take the fender of to adjust it.. I must tell you the car is totally been resprayed ( not by me, i bought it this way).
But here again i'm going to post pics. On the other hand this is the least of my concerns now...:).
To be continued.....

Did you put the front on Ramps and raise the lights, then look underneath. It has to be visible and I don't think you need to remove a Fender to get to all the Assembly Guts.

AirtekHVAC 04-12-2012 03:17 PM

on the 78, you can easily get to the assembly and mechanism from under the fender...mine does not have a wheel well insert, but looks like there was one there at one time...perhaps a few screws, and then you will have access?

Oh yea, forgot about that Cover. I thought he was talking about the whole fender. Yes, a few screws and that cover comes off. Most cars are missing that cover since they seem to disintegrate ;)

Hi guys,

been working a couple of hours on the car's odometer (again) on saturday and i' think i have two problem's with it. The odometer wasn't working because of the little gear thing missing a few teeth. But the second thing is very strange. When i've put the wole dash together again the odometer kept running ( after running for 15 km's with the car on a jack) till i get home. The other day it didn't work again (grrrr) but started working after a couple of km's. Since then it starts working everytime after a couple of km's when you've stopped the car for a couple of hours. I will leave it for now, because it works and honestly i'm a little bit fed up with this odometer thing. About the headlight adjustment, i will do it later and post some pics too.

Dirk Gelaude 04-16-2012 11:04 AM

Her's the pic of the little gear missing some tooth.
